Lord Denethor is such a selfish man with reagrds to favouritism. I don't believe that favouritism among children is right at all...I believe his dis-respect for Faramir is absolutley appauling. He favour Boromir mainly because he is the oldest and the heir in which he hoped woul replace Aragorn. He states that he will not bow to a ranger of the north and i guess that this implies he favour Boromir so much because of the fact he could have had the capability in Denethors eyes, to overcome Aragorn.
Why else is it that he's so insistent on disrespecting Boromir?

Oh, in that case...
Well, I'm not sure that's what he meant by not bowing to this ranger from the north. I think he meant he's not ready to give up being a steward just for Aragorn who didn't want to be king in the first place.

^I agree.
He did love Faramir, but just wouldnt admit it. Like when he was trying to burn him and then realized that he was still alive you saw the look on Denethors face. I actually thought it was very sad. But he was being very stupid and crazy for not listening to Pippin about Faramir being alive. He seemed very overwhelmed with everything, and wouldnt listen to anyone. But of course he ended up dying...

I would like to note how gorgeous Faramir looks when he wakes up after being pushed off the pyre...
Anyways...I think it was way exaggerated in the movies. The whole "I had died and Boromir had lived". It may be true that Denethor would have Boromir be alive, but I think given the choice he'd rather have both sons be alive than Boromir alive, Faramir dead.

Yes i meant disrespect towards Faramir.
Yes i understand the view he had against Aragorn due to the fact he himself wanted to remain steward. This is demonstrated in the movies when he stands up boldly and announces 'the rule of Gondor is mine...and no other's..' but i do not agree that he had any respect for faramir at all. For example, when he does realise that Faramir is alive, he doesn't give a second thought and would much rather have them both dead anyway. He was a weak individual and i don't believe he had enough faith in Faramir to allow him to continue his line, which i believe is the reason he was willing to sacrafice him anyway. Another reason was because he had lost his mind and the power of the dark lord was too powerful for him to see a path to good. Corruption was nigh for him.
Also when Farmir is about to go off to battle, Denethor states the fact that he wished Faramir had died and Boromir lived as someone has already mentioned, but think about the fact that Faramir asks his father to show a little more respect towards him, should he return, to which Denethor replies 'That will depend on the manner of your return' now i personally see that as very harsh and i don't believe that was a respectfull thing to say. Maybe it was because Denethor was sucha stubborn character that made him the way he was, or perhaps he had too much pride but whatever it was, he was not prepared to show any feelings of affection toward Faramir...if it had been the other way around, would he have acted the same towards Boromir in terms of showing no respect?

I think this should be moved to the movie section, because this part doesn't play out the same in the book. The parts you mentioned in your second paragraph, Frodos-Guide, do not occur like that in the book.

Was it not so that he didn't like Faramir that much as he reminded him of his wife who had died in childbirth? I think I read that somewhere, though I don't exactly remember where. It might be an answer to your question.
