Well, I don't actually think that he was referring to it specifically--I get the impression moreso that he was simply referring to healing which, quite simply, he cannot give, or is beyond his skill, etc. Meaning, if she wakens to despair, then there's nothing more he can do for her.

Back to Eowyn. Do you think if Eowyn woke up with dispair or forgetfullness, would that have meaned the Black Death would have damaged her mind?

Well, forgetfullness certainly makes it seem as though her mind would be damaged, but despair is a matter of the heart. I think despair would have eaten away at her til she was virtually nothing, completely lost to herself.

I agree with FRODOFAN concerning the other form of "healing". Aragorn could not love Eowyn, and therefore he could not heal her. However, Faramir could love her and therefore heal a heart that was broken. I don't think Aragorn directly alluded to Faramir's love, but was speaking of such an emotion in general terms.

Hmm...I wonder if the forgetfullness Aragorn mentioned would be anything like what happened to Nienel after Glaurung breathed on her in The Silmarillion. It seems sort of similar...

I think I agree with the idea that it works both ways, that the black breath feeds off emotional pain and despair, and also amplifies it.

The Black Breath seems to come over victims of the Nazgul. Frodo was wounded by a Nazgul and struggled until healed by Elrond. Faramir was wounded in a desperate fight where the Nazgul appeared against him and his army, and Eowyn was wounded by the witch-king when her shield-arm was smashed by his mace. In the last two, Aragorn did what he could to heal the physical wounds, but it would take something from inside the wounded to complete the healing.

Faramir was wounded by a dart when he and his men retreated from Osgiliath and Imrahil came to their rescue. Eowyn was wounded when she killed the Witch King, and Merry the same way. The people of Gondor called it the Black Shadow, and there were others before Eowyn and Merry who had it. But there was nothing they could do about it. I don't think the sickness came from coming in contact with a Nazgul, perhaps that's one way it happened, but Faramir had it, too, and he was wounded with a dart.
