I am something of a Tolkein purist, and I agree that TROK title does give it away, especially when you consider that when he wrote the books, there was no movie to get the jump on the stories, and learn what happens so quickly. If the movies didn't exist the books would be the only outlet for new Tolkein fans, and some would probaly like to find out for themselve how it ends.
Of course, for myself, if the movies didn't exist, I probably would not have read the books, and become such a fan. So, thanks PJ, for that.

No I don't think Tolkien should have named Return of the King "War of the Ring". It lacks a finishing taste in it. I doubt you understand me but still...

I do..and I, for one, completely agree- "The War of the Ring" makes it sound like that he would be opening the series to some three more movies, making it unnecessarily longer than it needs to be..so..yep.

I tend to agree with Caunion and Edward...The Return of the King is better than The War of the Ring because it has a touch of Conclusion....besides of which, I think one of the History of Middle-earth books is called The War of the Ring....though come to think of it, I think it was published after LotR....

i prefer the war of the ring - tolkien was right, the return of the king gives too much away. i mean, i know we all expected the quest to be victorious anyway (good always triumphs in such books) but it's still nicer not to be told in advance - i like to still have the "what it...?"

also, the war of the ring sounds more like a history book, which fits with the idea that it really happened and tolkien's merely translating frodo's chronicle of events.

and i think the use of the word "war" puts another spin on it - "battle" is more common in the book, but that doesn't mean so much to us these days, whereas "war" seems to have more resonance for now.
