King Theoden is one of my favourite characters. He is very strong mentally and very brave, willing to do what it's best for his poeple. e chose to go to war although he was somehow old. He knew that probably he would die but he prefered to die in a battle defending the Free Peoples rather than stay at home.

Ah, but if he was so strong mentally couldn't he have resisted Saruman. I know what you'll say, that no one would be able to go against Saruman's will accept another wizard such as Gandalf, but really, was Theoden that strong in the mind. He had many problems; war being one of them which already troubled his mind enough, weakening it. Grima did the rest.

I think Theoden is a kind and benevolent man with a good capacity to love. He obviously had a strong regard for Merry, Eowyn, Eomer, and Theodred, his son. I felt so bad for him when he found that his son was dead, and he hadn't even gotten to say goodbye to him! He was also really sweet when he was trying to cheer Eowyn up. "I would have you smile again." I also was so sad when he died. He was a brave warrior, and a good king.

I have to agree.

I really like the character of Theoden a lot.
He seems so strong and hard from the outside, but on the inside he is just a softy.

His death was so sad :'(

I think he's one of my favorite "supporting" characters. He is saved by Gandalf from a base existence, and show his kindness with his intereactions with Merry.
He then goes on to defend his people as best he knows how at Helm's Deep, and in the end finds a personal redemption in his death on the Pelenor Fields.

"I go now to my fathers. In whose mighty company, I shall not now feel ashamed".
We should all be able to go to our reward, being able to say, we are without shame for our lives. It is to be envied.

I love Theoden (as I love all the characters only a little more) I love the way they put Eyowen in instead of Mary that just put the icing on the cake. I know he was happy when he died hes job was done he went to the halls of his fathers with honor and glory.

Hear! Hear! Darrell! Those are words that move us to the core. Why is it so hard for us to live like that? I think Tolkien does a great job of painting a picture of the reality of the trauma of coming to that place in our lives. We sooooo crave a relationship like that with our fathers and with our people but alas! relationships remain such a battle for us.

anyone else here think that theoden is one of the best characters in the book? he is remarkably heroic and brave, and his death in rotk is just heart-wrenching! i think he deserves some credit!

Since this was the orginal question, this is the one that I will address. Best character of the book? By no means. A great and admirable character? By all means! Theoden King was a king who, in the end, had redemption. And, yes, his death was certainly heart-wrenching! As has already been noted in this thread, he knew he was riding to his death and he went to that with great honor and valor. His brave onslaught had just saved Minas Tirith and Gondor. "I go now to my fathers, in whose mighty company I shall not now feel ashamed". Indeed, Theoden King!!!

The culture of Rohan in general is both stalwart and beautiful. They had beautiful craftsmanship, and yet had a very hard life. I prefer their culture and way of life over others in Middle Earth...they made beauty out of pain. Theoden himself is a symbol of Rohan and its lifestyle, and so therefore is indeed a heroic figure. Also, at the end of the day, though they didn't always trust others, they were good people who made the right decision (aiding Gondor during the siege of Minas Tirith, etc.).
