Most the orcs probably died. The remainder would've hidden until a new Lord found them. At the end of Lord of the Rings, there's no mention of all evil being vanquished forever.

In Tolkien's letters he talks about starting another story, set 100 years after Aragorn's death. But it was the same sad story all over again, men become so soon satiated with good. Soon Gondorian boys were playing at being Orcs and plots full of sorcery revolution outcropped while kings became as bad as Denethor or worse....Tolkien said it wasn't worth doing.
Looking at it through Tolkien's eyes I can only immagine the Orcs arrising once more to harrass men. All it would take is a powerful and charismatic man with a lust for power.....

Yes, that's a good point. I think it's also because there will always be evil in the heart of Men. Unfortunate, but true. Tolkien might even say something like that in the appendices. I don't have my copy of RotK with me at the moment, so I can't look it up. At any rate, I know he does say that even though Sauron has been defeated there is still evil in the world.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't in the appendices, but rather elsewhere, perhaps in HoME or tBoLT, or The Unfinished Tales.
But that's very true, Aerlinniel and Sinbearer. Even with Sauron's defeat, there's no way that the world would keep relatively good. It would slowly degrade once more into darkness.

Well, it is the only thing from HoME that I've seen you quoting in the last week or two....

Nope. That always sparks my curiousity when I read it, but it's quickly overwhelmed by my curiousity about the Sindarin Elves, Teleri, and Vanyar.

That's weird. *shuns Andreth*
But....we're straying from the topic.

Well, I was shunning her for contradicting the person who wrote her. Hah. So there.
We were straying off-topic, considering that the original topic is 'what we think happened to the orcs after Sauron's defeat'.
But I already stated my opinion, so I'm not going to be redudant. I suggest we make a new topic, Aerlinn. Maybe a random Questions&Pondering thread, if that's permitted by the mods.

K, I'm going to start it in The Last Homely House, since that's where it fits, but I'm not sure if it'll be locked or not, since I'm not sure whether or not it fits the general 'rules' about topics and stuff, considering it's going to lack any constant one.

I always imagined them as hiding in the mountains or terrozing the people.
