I thought is was too, but Tolkain did want to have all 3 books in the same volume, with the name "The Lord of the Ring" (someone please correct me if I am wrong) but the publishers though it would be too long to be one book, hence the three seperate ones.
It wasn't so much, the book would be to long, as the publishers felt the book would have been to expensive for readers in post-war England, to be able to afford the price. Hence, no one would read it.
I also agree, that I have trouble with the books of just Frodo, Sam, and Gollum. They are, to me, a bit tedious.
