I suppose I don't really mind that they put it in.
Of course it was just so different that I was like OMG WHAT!? But it was a very touching scene, and in the end, that's exactly what the ring was doing to Frodo.
And movies always exagerate, but that scene shows us two things:
One: How much the ring was actually corrupting Frodo, and at that moment the movie audience needs something that shows for certain how bad things are getting.
and
Two: How Sam is willing to go so far for Frodo, that even when he begins to leave, he goes back up, because he knows Frodo can't make it.

Yes, it deviates from th books, a lot, but i's a touching scene, I cry almost everytime i see it, it's so terrible, and if you havn't seen the book, it's what the audience wants.
