I think a good movie not only requires good actors, writers, director, etc., but also a underlying message, or moral, or that just makes you think about deeper things. I'd also say not just good characters, but specifically well-developed characters. Characters with a history and a personality.

I also agree with Eru: that the score is really important! I mean, I think the best actors, writers, and directors could all get together and make a movie, but if the movie didn't have a score it just wouldn't be the same.

^Then why are old movies so great? Some of the greatest movies of all time had hardly any music at all!

A film has to have heart, people doing the movie need to be doing it for the love of the movie, not just for more money.

Plot, a plot is a huge thing, you need a good plot, thats understandable, makes sense and draws the reader into it, and doesnt let go until the very ending.

Characters/Actors, both are very important, you want actors and and actresses that can make a character believeable, if you dont have decent actors, the movie could fall apart.

Music, also very important, it has to work with the movie, and co-operate with the sound effects, if the two are clashing, its no good.

Continuity/editing, speak for themselves, if you dont have good continuity and editing, your movie goes down the drain.

A lot of the time - to me - the best kind of movies have

1. A motivating and intricate plot with sometimes more then one thing happening at once (like PotC & LotR)
2. A wide variety of personified and interesting characters
3. Depending on the movie the visual effects can have a big impact on the quality of a movie too
4. Something that challenges you to think about the story

Pretty much what everyone's already said… also sometimes I do just enjoy silly movies that don't really challenge you to think but just let you laugh… but that's beside the point. :p

To me a good movie has to make me feel. That is the most important thing to me. I do not just want to sit there and stare at the screen. I want to laugh, cry, get angry, feel my heart flutter with excitement, etc sometimes with the characters and sometimes against certain characters. So long as I feel something towards the characters I think that it is a good thing. That means that they have to have good characters (inclueding at least a few that you can really understand, feel for, and connect with and then others that you hate because they are villains or what not) and good actors and actreses. Also I like to think. I like to have to be completely awake to truly understand what is going on. Movies where I go to sleep half way through and wake up at the end and am able to tell you everything that happened (while I was asleep), I find boring. So in short you have to have an entertaining and slightly complex plot with good dialogue. After that I would say the music. I love a movie with some music. I like songs with lyrics probabley the best (that just carry along with the story) but there are some moments in movies that just scream for orchaestra (spelling?) music. For example Pirates of the Caribbean as a whole. The Hoist the Colors and a Pirates life for me were great songs and I would never take them out of the movies. However there were times that I felt that the music did not need music. For example (spoiler for At World's end ahead) Will's death scene. The same goes for Lord of the Rings. May it Be is an awesome song and I love that they played it but the epic music without lyrics was perfectly placed as well. Then there are movies like Elizabethtown that the songs with lyrics are just perfect! The right music to go with the paticular scenes is very importent as Dark Queen of Angmar said. So to recap...

1. Characters that you can connect with, understand, feel for and some that you just feel something for (even if it is hatred just because the character is "evil" or anti hero"). As I said earlier so long as I feel Something towards the character most of the time, I think that that is a good thing.
2. Great actors and actresses. (Maybe one or two cute actors too... . Having someone like Orlando Bloom...certainly helps in my opinion. lol)
3. A slightly complex plot
4. Good dialogue
5. Music that fits the feel of the movie
:-D

First of all, the music. I mean imagine LotR or any other movie without the music.
Second is the actors and actress. A bad one can actually make a whole movie really bad.
