was not personally directed at you. Just my opinion on critic-elitism in general. And how movies should be viewed IN MY OPINION. I know JF responded directly to you, I just agreed with her opinion on the matter as a whole and not necessarily as a rebuttal to you.
I've been annoyed by the amateur snobby elitist critics that are so frequently featured on sites like IMDb.com for YEARS. Since this thread brought the issue up, I figured I'd add my two cents to how I feel about them. Not anyone in particular. Just the issue in general.
I'll tell people to "let go" as much as I please. Thank you very much.

Anything I said about the way I dislike critics (as in people who are paid to actually write review about a film and inform the public of what the film is about etc) was aimed only at those people ethelfleda. If you're opinions happen to reflect the critics, that's not really my fault. You're personal tastes and opinions are just that; your own. And I would not criticse anyone who shares their own opinions with people here on AU. I am critising the way the critics inform the public with what I think, are closed and biased minds.
I stongly dislike the way the majority of critics review films these days and what ingredients they think a film must have to make a film great etc etc. Most people just want to know if it's a good film, and if they'll like it. Not that they'll end up searching their souls and gasping at the fact the meaning of the film is meaningful. Those sort of things which supposedly "make" a film, would go over the heads of most people. And a lot of critics write as if their opinions are fact, and basically if you don't "get" what they found in the film, you're a moron who has no taste in films.
That's really all I was trying to say.
Some film critics are very good though and make valid, sensible points and while their articles actually give you the basic outline of the film (the "best" reviews are the ones they tell you nothing about the film, but continue to whine about the director and how he has no "style" that shouts out "I am ------- film!") the articles are intereting to read as they also give you added information and trivia and are usually written by people with a sense of humour, and not those who are wearing their underpants a bit too tight.

I saw this the other day, and while I really liked it for purely entertaining purposes (and Brandon Walters was amazing as Nullah), there were a couple of things that really confused me. For starters, it seemed to have really weird pacing. It was really drawn out-ish at the start (for the droving), then it sped through a lot of events, and then it slowed down for WWII. It seemed to have no plot, which might not matter for purely entertainment purposes, but it bothers me on some deep level. O_o
And then they used a bunch of really strange effects at the strangest times. A whole bunch of scenes had (so it seemed to me) softening effects on the sky, or on the terrain, sort of like Soft Glow. Except I [still] can't figure out what was gained by that. It made those parts seem either like dream sequences or really poorly done (by modern standards, anyway) green screen scenes. At those moments, I felt like they were trying to do something like in Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow or something, which I didn't think fit in with the sort of rugged beauty of the rest of the film.
So yeah. Those are the two holes I'm going to poke in the hull before I caulk it up by commenting again on how Brandon Walters did such a great job. And Wenham makes an awesome villain. ^_^

David villain, woot? come on don't spoil it... havn't seen it yet ...maybe they used those effects to make it seem more dream like, and then contrast it in with the war big, so that its not so dreamly like after all - its so sweet and pleasuable, but then it gets bad from there with disateroius events taking place??? .... only a thought

They didn't really use it in the WWII parts, just at random moments on the big drove and stuff. So I can't figure out why they would do something like that. O_o

yea they wouldn't use it in the WWII parts because that's more of reality...maybe they used it in the other parts as it was more dream like- they created peaceful jaxaspoition to make it more unbelievable..... is there anything to do with part or paintings in the movie, maybe that could also link in with it all? Or is the ending quite peaceful? Anything?

I actually saw this movie on my plane back from LA and my flight was shorter than the movie. I had to wait two days till I got home to watch it and it was pure agony. Its the worst not finishing a movie you get all into!
I actually really enjoyed it. I will agree with the critics on the point of a lack of plot but for some reason I still really liked it. Maybe its because I love Australia so much and the movie caught some of that amazing character that the place has. It got the wildness that is still very much present in most of the country and I loved that.
The presentation was also great. I loved the cinematography and the great shots and all that jazz. Loved it. And I kind of liked the glowy-sky effects that they used when they did. It was used a lot for contrast. I find that real life is a bit like that... Bad things always seems a bit unreal.
Acting-wise I adored Brandon Walters and David Wenham! And Hugh Jackman was just -drool- He looks good scruffy
I tried really hard not to analyze and find some 'deeper meaning' like I usually do... I mean I found it anyway But I really liked the movie as a whole.

I had high hopes for this movie before it came out. I went and watched it, and it was a great evening of entertainment. That said, I think I was caught up in all the pre-release hype. I think ethelfleda hit the nail on the head with some of her criticism. It tried to be too much, and all the pre-release hype wasn't lived up to. Hugh Jackman & Nicole Kidman didn't perform their best, and the movie took too much from other old movies (Gone With the Wind, 60's Clint Eastwood spagetti westerns, Pearl Harbour, etc.) which made many scenes way too predictable. Trying to tie it all together into an epic tale didn't quite come off. Instead it was quite choppy.
What was good was the scenery, the kid, & depicting the Japanese attack on Darwin, which is hardly ever mentioned in the histories of WW2. Will I watch it again? Maybe I'll rent the DVD if there's nothing better to watch.
