I know... I meant 'classic' as in they are in rotation on channels like TCM because people still enjoy them and find they have a certain quality. Like Gone with the Wind, Lawrance of Arabia, Citizen Kane etc, those epic films they always show over the holidays.

bit gutted that neither of my favourites - rebecca and the red shoes - are one there. thinking about it, i can't believe there are no powell and pressburger films on the list. that's just wrong.

other than that, i'd say it was a pretty fair list. of the films i've seen, the only one i think doesn't deserve a place is west side story - the worst, most overrated film i've ever seen.

@ Ea - Ah, I see what you mean. :-) Yes, those three are kinda epic. I prefer the smaller films, the ones that are just stories that are well written and acted without all the bravado and everything.

I personally would have liked Rebecca to have been on there as well, as I think it is Hitchcock's best and there are a lot of Hitchcock films on there. But I can see why it isn't on the list really, as it's never been regarded as one of his best. Or it was until films like Vertigo and Rear Window came out in the 50's. I think the most over-rated film on there, of the ones I have seen, is definitely Citizen Kane.

Oh man, you guys really should watch Dr. Strangelove (Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love the Bomb). :P It's so great. Starring Peter Sellers, Peter Sellers, and Peter Sellers.

Ooh, you are lucky you have that channel. I don't have it, and can only sigh and simper when I read what is on.

Well I would recommened these films (although I don't know what genres you like/dislike etc),

Citizen Kane (worth watching to see what all the fuss is about. It is technically clever.. although weird camera angles that were pioneering back then are wasted on me :P Other than that I find it just a good film)
Lawrence of Arabia
Vertigo
The Searchers
Sunset Boulevard (I like films that look at the movie industry and what it is like. And this is one of them about a star that has faded)
The General
It's a Wonderful Life (will make you feel all warm amd fuzzy inside)
Some Like It Hot
The Grapes of Wrath
High Noon
Double Indemnity
The Maltese Falcon
The Bridge on the River Kwai
The Best Years of Our Lives
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
The Philadelphia Story (Cary Grant, James Stewart and Katharine Hepburn. 'Nuff said. :P)
Rear Window
North by Northwest
The African Queen (Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn on a small boat and him a drinker and her a religious spinster?! :swoon: One of my favourites)
The Apartment
12 Angry Men (possibly one of the best films ever to be set in one room and just be about 12 men talking ;))
Yankee Doodle Dandy (worth it to see James Cagney dance and sing. Even gives Fred Astaire a run for his money)
Ben-Hur

They are just what I would look out for. If you like a certain actor (for example, James Stewart, he's on that list quite a lot, along with Humphrey Bogart) then that might be another reason why you may wish to watch some of those films.

Thanks, both of you. A lot of those are definitely on my wanting-to-see list. I'm going to run off and check the TCM schedule. ;)

27/100. Eh, not too good. Some of these I was forced to watch in film club, and personally I don't see what all the fuss is about them. I'm sorry to all you who love Casablanca, but I just about shot myself, it was so boring. Citizen Cane wasn't nearly as bad though. I actually found it pretty entertaining. But we also had to watch Dr. Strangelove, which while funny at some parts, was completely unmemerable at most. Vertigo was just stupid, end of discussion.

However, there are quite a few here that I do really like. Shindler's LIst is a very good movie. It takes you by the balls and shoves you into the haulocost. I watched it in a world religions class one year, and I always left that class depressed. Ben Hur is another good movie, which I watched in my Latin class. It has an amazing chariot race. I also liked A Clock Work Orange. That movie, like Shindler's List, is hard to watch, but a pretty good adaptation of a phenominal book.
