I loved this movie lol. I loved how they really didn't avoid the fact that Sherlock does have some substance abuse problems, and also the little violin scores (That as far as I can tell are actually supposed to be posed as Holmes playing them)

I loved it. There was some massive theatre drama to go with me watching this, but Im so glad I saw it!
It was true to the spirit of the books, and I love, love love Watson. Holmes is awesome, and he is totally kick-butt, but there is something rather more civilized that I adore about Watson. Anyways.
Great casting, great costumes, and great storyline. I was thoroughly entertained and happy. Can I say that the humour was brilliant? It was the subtle, dry, almost sadistic English style that Im so fond of, and I was giggling through lots of it. Brilliant.

I am actually going to see that tonight with my brothers now and then we head out to the mall to see a movie and to spoil ourselves.
It actually looks very promising I can't wait to see it.

First of all, I request, nay I demand that this thread be more active.
Secondly, in reply to you Larael, I did in fact know that Mr. Mark "Septimus" Strong was in this film which is one of the reasons why I a) wanted to watch this in the first place and b) was quite prepared to go to prison for stealing an 8 foot banner of him from my local cinema, but alas it had been removed before I could do so (*cries*), which is why I am here now.
As a Holmes fan, I should probably lay to rest any fears that other Holmes fans may have.
Taurquende wrote: I'm not sure, but probably not. I like the Holmes stories for their mystery and suspense, but from the trailer they seem to have turn him into an action hero, which is very galling. But don't mind me... I'm wary of any Holmes film that doesn't stick exactly to the Canon. I have to give them props, though, for shying away from the stereotypes that don't appear in the Canon, like the deerstalker hat, inverse cape, and curved-stem pipe. Also, RDJ is a great actor, and his take on Holmes might be interesting. I also read he studied Jeremy Brett's performance (who was and still is the best Holmes. Ever.) from the 80's TV series in preparation for the role, which earns him brownie points from me, at least.
Everyone should see this film. Everyone. The Holmes fans and the rest.
I appreciate your concerns, but over the years there have been Holmes films were he finds the Loch Ness monster and Holmes films where he has battled Hitler. Believe me, there are worse Holmes sins than this film. Having Holmes as a character who doesn't just stand and observe all the time, suited the Holmes this film has created.
The main qualities of the Holmes stories were these:
Story above all, mystery and suspense couple with well placed humour and even sadness. A main character; eccentric, brilliant, likeable, aloof, vulnerable. A concoction of feelings. A companion; loyal, steadfast, frustrated by his counterpart and the only one who could really help Holmes to help himself.
All these things were to be found in this film. There were homages paid to previous Sherlock Holmes adaptations and the books. The flies being played to by Holmes; straight out of a Basil Rathbone film. Holmes, picking Watson's brains as to why a pocketwatch was so marked; I could see Jeremy Brett all through that scene. The classic scene of Holmes firing bullets into a wall - what self respecting adaptation would not have that in?
But it was the characters of Holmes and Watson themselves that even purists could not help but like. While they argue more like a married couple, and Holmes is possibly less aloof and more likely to say something devilishly witty than he is in the books, the relationship between him and Watson was perfectly captured, and I think they have probably given it a lot of thought as to how they could capture the friendship of two such popular characters.
I really think, even for it's modernistic approach to some things (Holmes wearing sunglassses might not have worked ordinarily, but this film it just suited him), I think that you would definitely come away enjoying this interpretation.
And now my friends.... onto the things I loved about this film.
The opening scene I think was rather brave to plunge us into a big scene, and although I was a little disconcerted with some of the slow motion action scenes and the way the music ended and just left us with the sound of punches etc, it served it's purpose of getting me used to it, as it was used a lot later.
I'm not one for arty-farty camera work and tricky shots (like the "this way up" crate, only to pan out to an upside down world), but again, it just suited this film so much, I cannot fault it or say it detracted from my viewing pleasure. It was certainly different for me, and I particularly liked the way they allowed us to see inside Holmes' head as he planned his move (the writing for those lines were hilarious *discombobulate* ) and then we saw it again in full action reply.
I have got to hand it to Robert Downy Jr. He was AMAZING. Although he did mumble a lot (I am looking forward to seeing this on DVD with subtitles) he really was so much fun to watch, and although he is not THE Sherlock Holmes, no one could have given as good a performance as THIS Holmes. He was just an absolute scene stealing rogue, and I loved watching him. I really enjoyed seeing new aspects to Holmes, but one of my favourite scenes was when he was in the restaurant, and I just felt so sorry for him. It captured in that one scene so well, what it must be like to be Holmes and how lonely it must be.
I also have to say Jude Law was very, very good as Watson. He did have a character who in comparison could be called "dull" compared to Holmes, but the writers did a great job with Watson and called on all the qualities of the book Watson, and really made him the moral, normal equal to Holmes' eccentric character.
Lord Blackwood. My goodness. I almost could not contain my excitement when I first heard him speak and then saw him. Mark Strong is so under appreciated. He made Blackwood the perfect foil for Holmes and he did it with so much style and mastery. He has an amazingly commanding voice, which I am glad they used as much as they did. And he was in a lot, so even though he died.... it made me happeh.
The music was excellent. I knew it was Hans Zimmer before I went, and to be honest, there were definitely some "twangy" bits which I subconconciously noted as very liked the music in AWE when Jack was in Davy Jones' locker, but the music certainly suited the occassion (it sounded like Victorian London and twangy music shouldn't mix, but it does).
And all the females who were present were also very good and didn't annoy me, which is always great. Clever of them to use Irene Adler rather than bring in another female, although I'm guessing they might do that for the next film.
And I have to mention Lestrade. Eddie Marson is such a fantastic character actor, I was made up when he came on screen and I was devestated when Lestrade was revealed to be a traitor as I thought it might have been something they changed. So glad it was not true.
The writing had some of the best lines I have heard in a long time. It's been a while since I have had to stifle a laugh in the cinema.
Sherlock Holmes: It's a matter of professional integrity! No girl wants to marry a doctor who can't tell if a man's dead or not! [this was the one that REALLY got me]
Inspector Lestrade: In another life, Mr. Holmes, you would have made a great criminal. Sherlock Holmes: Yes, and you, sir, a great police officer [this is the part where JF was trying not to roll round the floor]
Sherlock Holmes: . Summary: ears ringing, jaw fractured, three ribs cracked, four broken, diaphragm hemorrhaging. Physical recovery six weeks. Full psychological recovery six months. Ability to spit at back of head neutralized.
All in all, I absolutely loved it, and it's been a while since I have really enjoyed myself at the cinema.

And by the way I just watched it, Watson was my all time favorite character of the film and I loved that cane he carried.

I loved the newest Sherlock Holmes movie! I loved it so much I saw it twice in theatres (and I hate going to the theatre). It was a perfect blend of actions, humor, and drama. I was a bit nervous about Jude Law playing Dr. Watson, but he did a wonderful job.
As a fan of the books for years, I was quite pleased with this adaptation and I can't wait to get it on dvd .

I absolutely LOVE this movie. I don't have much to add since JF pretty much stole everything I said Although I did like watching Rachel McAdams. She's rather pleasing to the eye but doesn't quite reduce me to the swooning mess that Natalie Portman leaves behind. I did love the ho yay between Holmes and Watson and the banter and quibbling. And the music is to DIE for.
Btw, JF. This was me when watching the trailer for it.
"Is that..yeah I think it is. Hang on, let me check....Oh lovely, it is Septimus. Oh. Oh...JF is going to love this."
GOOD! GOD! Holmes fighting Hitler?! Oh dear...

I keep trying to reply to JF's post, but it's so overwhelming. xD I think I agreed with most/all of it, though.
I want sheet music for the violin music. So. Much. D:
Also, I did just see a preview for a different Holmes movie that had dinosaurs and robots in it. It made me cringe. o.0 I don't even know if that's better or worse than Hitler. *facepalm* Honestly, who comes up with stuff like that?

The same people who put zombies in Pride and Prejudice. You know, I actually kinda want to see the new Wolfman movie. With all the zombie and vampire rage going on, it's nice to see the other supernatural being shed in the moonlight.

It's the accompanying "mockbuster." (A B-movie that rides on the popularity of a mainstream movie.) Not meant to be a serious piece of cinema, thank goodness.
But wait... there isn't actually a film where he literally battles Hitler, is there? The Rathbone films made during WWII are one thing, especially as Holmes did practically the same thing in His Last Bow, but is there one where he boxes with Hitler, or something? I am aware of the Loch Ness one, however.
Anyway, I am somewhat relieved by what JF has said about the film. The trailer, to me, portrayed him as a sort of kick-butt action hero, getting into the most ridiculous scrapes that the writers could conceive of, and with none or very little of the brilliant deductions that I love so much about Sherlock Holmes. In fact, I'm thrilled to hear they included the watch scene and flies. I still have some reservations, but I will see it, if I get the chance.

@ Aranel - Lol, well I would be interested to hear your thoughts when you have the time.
@ Frosty - Yay! I am infamous for my love of certain people who play certain villains. *high fives* Whenever I see a Natalie Portman trailer, I swear I will think of you.
@ Shadow - I was on a roll that night, and still intoxicated from it all.
@ Kitoky - Reviews mean nothing in the great sense of the word,. The most know UK reviewer over here, hates LOTR so... the best way to choose is to make your own decision or ask someone who knows pretty much knows the kind of stuff like, if you listened to everyone about things you'd never watch it.
If you like fun, action, adventure, a good story and a good cast, there's pretty much no reason why you wouldn't have a really good time.
@ Taur - Well put it this way, he does know how to defend himself, and he does box for sport, but then Holmes was a boxer wasn't he, so they haven't really included anything that never happened. And most of the scrapes he get into - it's not really his fault. Usually he has stumbled on a clue that is then being proected by bad guys. Oh, yes there is a lot of deducting as well.
Oh, boy I so want to see this film again. The soundtrack though, is not the most easy on the ears when you listen to it without the film. It's very good and certainly different, but not too nice to the ol' eardrums.
*sigh* I just love looking at my computer background... I think I'm in love..... *sigh*.... Lord Blackwood.....
