I can't believe I never posted in this thread. Sense and Sensibility is by far my favourite of Jane Austen's books and my favourite of her books adapted to film. I believe it was the first movie that made me fall in love with Alan Rickman. Ah, poor Marianne... She's passionate and slightly dramatic but I can't help loving her character for the transformation she goes through.
Has anyone seen the recent BBC version of S&S? Colonel Brandon certainly isn't as dashing and Dominic Cooper as Willoughby is a miscast, but otherwise I almost like it more than the 1995 version just for the fact that we see so much more of the book on screen (including lots of Marianne/Brandon moments that made me swoon).

^ Dominic Cooper as in the guy in Mamma Mia? Uh... lol. He's cute, but no Willoughby.
Ok, S&S is okay, but I vastly prefer P&P. I have seen S&S (or parts of it... not sure if I've seen the whole thing), and I kinda have to struggle through it. Also, Colonel Brandon is the hero and everything, but a bit old imo. Also, Alan Rickman = Snape forever
I still want to see Hugh Laurie in it. He's one of the side characters. LOL House in 19th century England.

Sense and Sensibility. Ah, what a story.
I can't really hand on heart say this is my favourite Jane Austen book or even my favourite of her books turned into films. They all have their merits and their little problems. I love them all.
Agreed, the BBC Sense and Sensibility was more true to the books (story wise certainly not character wise), but I forgive the film because it was just over 2 hours, the BBC version was over 3.
I think the casting in the film was pretty much perfect. I absolutely hated Marianne, Brandon and Willoughby especially, in the BBC.
Marianne was too much like a 21st century tart for me to feel any compassion for her whatsoever. Kate Winslet's Marianne was a romantic who was passionate about many things, I never saw her as doing anything wrong purposely, she was just a little headstrong. Her eventual realization of what exactly love means made perfect sense, whereas in the BBC version, it was almost tacked on at the end, and it was not believable that Marianne would settle down with Brandon.
Brandon. When you have been treated to Alan Rickman, anyone else is bound to fail. I think they made Brandon into far too much of a bore for the BBC version. Reading the books, I have never imagined him as a bore just because he is quieter than Willoughby.
And speaking of Willoughby.... ARGH! He was totally the hiss boo villain, and that's not how you're meant to feel about him. He just looked evil from the start. You are meant to feel compassion for Willoughby, even after all he has done. But this... jerk... just went straight into him being a panto villain wooing a fair maiden.... bleurgh... I missed Greg Wise so much whilst sitting through that prune's performance.
I did ADORE Elinor though. Don't know who she was, but she even made me forget about Emma Thompson (as good as she is).
The film really does have some priceless actors in it, and it's certainly has the upper hand over the BBC version if not just for the beautiful scenery and the music.

Those are some excellent points, JF, and I agree with most of them whole-heartedly. Elinor and Edward were perfect for me in the BBC version, and probably the best aspect about it. There were several other minor details and situations that I adored far better in the BBC version, but I believe the film will definitely be my forever favourite adaptation.
[Somehow I always manage to convince myself after the fact. ]

(Erg, I just typed this out once and the computer ate it. Here's to a second try...)
I've seen both versions of the movie, and really don't care for the BBC one as well, for many of the aforementioned reasons. However, as Laurel said, I find it very commendable that they did try to include as many of the scenes as possible... (and long movies are never a bad thing in my opinion.) It's greatest fault was just the bad casting.
I actually love Hugh Grant as Edward, even though I'm not a fan of the actor. I think in his very awkwardness, he was a good portrayel of the dispassionate Edward. I enjoyed the bit of human fault he lent to a very romantical movie.
My favorite thing about the movie was the portrayel of Willoughby, and especially the sympathetic end where he stands and watches their happiness. I'm glad it differed a bit from the book in that, it was a very nice touch.
Oh yes and Alan Rickman = epic win. There will never, ever be a better cast for Brandon.

Sense and Sensibility is actually the only ----- and good lord, I'm going to get skinned for this ---- role I've seen Alan Rickman in where he plays a romantic role (and the only movie I've seen him in outside the Harry Potter films) and I adored his character and I love the Marianne/Brandon coupling.

Well to be honest, he doesn't really do the whole "romantic role thing", not even when he was younger. The only one I have seen other than S&S is Truly, Madly, Deeply and then he plays a ghost and there's only so much romantical aspects a dead person can have.
But..... *gets out knife* ..... you have GOT to see more of his films! Sweeney Todd, Robin Hood, Galaxy Quest!! I insist! Go, go, go!

He sort of plays a romantic role in An Awfully Big Adventure. Albeit, he's pining for a lost love and just happens to fall in love with said lost loves daughter. Not the typical romance, but I suppose it could be considered as one nonetheless.
I rather like the idea that this is AR's only "romantic" role. He played it so very well, and I think he'd have a hard time topping it again.

Agreed. While reading the book, I really didn't get a sense of what Edward might be like. I just sort of passed over him. This led to me thinking it should be Elinor/Brandon and setting aside the book in somewhat disgust. However, the movie made me love Edward so much more! His awkwardness and dry humor....loved it. It really grounds you instead of having twenty silly people.

Oh man, I don't even know how many times I've seen this movie, I love it so much
I love Emma Thompson for writing the screenplay, but I do think she was a little bit old to be playing Elinor.
However, I think Alan Rickman was perfect for Colonel Brandon.
And I've always been a huge Kate Winslet fan, she's pretty much the bomb-diggidy

I saw this movie years and years ago. I loved it. Then I forgot about it. Later on I read the book and decided to watch the movie again. And I still loved it. To me Alan Rickman is Bradon.... probably because I first saw the movie and then read the book.

I just recently saw Sense and Sensibility for the first time, and really liked it. Alan Rickman was brilliant, I love him in it. And I feel so sorry for him! Hugh Grant and Hugh Laurie were both awesome. Marianne...well, she is the person that I love to make fun of. It's just too tempting to poke fun at "Oh, oh, Willoughby, how could you? I must go faint now!" Nothing against those of you who like her. But, the main reason for my looking up this thread. Deleted scenes. Has anyone else watched them? Edward and Elinor's kiss! Aiee, it was so cute and adorable! He's so nervous. "Um...excuse me.." *kiss*
The only reason I'm bringing back this thread is that I couldn't find the general Austen-thread Nurr refers to. So in case I never get around to start one.. at least we have this one. In honour of the BEST Austen movie ever!!!
Interesting thing is that this (and Mansfield Park) is the only Austen-book I haven't read yet but I loved this movie the most!
