i can't believe i haven't posted in here before. little women has been one of my favourite films since i was seven, and i don't think i'll ever grow tired of it. i must have seen it fifty times and i still weep every time beth dies, and melt in the scene at the opera and the final scene.

kitoky - i completely agree with you about the whole jo/laurie vs jo/friedrich thing. whatever laurie may have tried to say, if she'd married him she'd have been expected to play the part of a society lady, which wouldn't have suited her. and you're right, the fact that he said "you won't have to write unless you want to" does show how little he knew her - he should have known there was no possibility of her not writing, and that she did have to write because it was in her soul. on the other hand i absolutely adore friedrich - i love the way he looks at her and the way he pushes her to be honest with herself. he's second after faramir on my list of fictional guys i wish were real, because if they were they'd be perfect.

i have to admit though, i'm not keen on the book - louise may alcott is far too preachy for my liking.

JF: Why are on you online, go watch it this instant!

ethelfleda: Agreed, oh how wonderful Friedrich is, and you make a good point in the difference of how he and Laurie look at Jo. I find that Laurie looks at her as the girl who would always be by his side, and someone who would always make him laugh, his friend and so he tries to keep her always by his side to make him laugh, to give her all she could ever want with his money and his connections to Europe where she'd always dreamed of going.

Then there's Friedrich, who first acknowledges her as the awkward, nervous young woman across the breakfast room. Soon after, he literally almost runs her over in the street and tries to keep her from throwing herself in front of horse-carriages as she scrambles for her writings. After a long talk over coffee, he sees her as a, still awkward, but intelligent woman who has so much potential to become a great novelist. He sees that in her, he helps her as she writes, but he is always honest with her about her writings, and he only wants to see that she is happy with her own writing, not what other people feel about it.

I sort of... wanted to see Laurie's reaction after hearing of Jo's engagement to Friedrich, because I thought it'd be simply drama since Laurie said, "You'll meet a man, fall in love with him, and marry him, live and die for him. And I'll be hanged should I stand by a watch."

Lol, 'tis not the time to watch films for me I'm afraid. :teehee:

It's going to be very interesting from my point of view. Katharine Hepburn is my ideal as Jo, the Laurie in her film was good, and the Friedrich was wonderful. The 1950's version, Jo was Ok, Laurie was good and again Friedrich was wonderful. They were all pretty close to the book as well (one of my favourites).

I have not heard great things of Wynona Ryder, so I'm sceptical of how well she will do. Christian Bale is Christian Bale, so he will be great. And it seems to have a good cast overall.

I adored Winona Ryder as Jo, so [shrug]. I mean, you first saw the versions with Katharine Hepburn and I know you admire her so much so it's obviously going to be hard to try and like another version of Jo, but we'll see. I mean, really. I really really really liked Winona in this; the first movie I ever saw her was The Crucible where she didn't play a very well liked character and I hated her---as I should have, which makes her an excellent actress.

Christian Bale is probably my ideal Laurie, mainly because he can pull off innocent, playful, and boyish but at the same time he play off devious, cunning, and most importantly, longing.

Oooh, I positively [ilove[/i] this movie. I bought 50 of the DVD's two years ago and gave them to everyone I knew as Christmas presents. :D

First off: I admit to feeling a complete admiration for the character of Meg. My favorite scene in the movie is where Meg goes to the ball and lets the other girls "do her up." To me; that is the best Laurie moment; because he expresses such disappointment, and such faith at the same time. In a way he seems to be saying, "I expected so much better of you." And for him to express this to her - what a gentlemen.

Not to mention that I love Laurie/Amy. It's so amazing how they went from, well, sort of an unequal friendship (Laurie was obviously a friend of the whole family, but I believe -as is insinuated in the book- everyone thought of him as "Jo's friend.") to love. Amy suits Laurie so well too! She has Jo's passionate nature - whcih I think is what Laurie really loved about Jo - and she also has a good deal of grace and elegance, which Jo lacked.

Oh, Kit, you must get the book! As was earlier stated in this thread, Alcott is a little preachy at times - but not overbearingly so. And I simply love the extra things that they didn't have room for in the movie (parties, tea's, and lots of descriptions of Jo's books and plays!)

And another thing, I completely agree with you that Bale was the perfect Laurie.

Oh, this is awesome! :bounce: I have loved this movie (and the book (which is a very good book, btw) forever! Oh, yes I enjoyed Winona Ryder as Jo! she did a good job.

FM, I love the whole scene when Meg goes to the ball too  ....but I guess she's always been my favorite character anyway :P I don't know if I could single it down to just one favorite scene though... I love them all. :teehee:

P.s I'm so happy that I saw this and that there are other Little Women movie fans (who love it like I do) out there! :-D

FM - i have to disagree with you about the whole amy/laurie thing. for me, their relationship just never rings true. they can each give the other what they've always wanted, but i just don't believe they're really in love. maybe it was just a lack of chemistry between the actors - i don't know.

and i have to say, i can't stand amy. she's such a little brat, and every time it gets to the bit where she burns jo's manuscript i want to throw something through the telly at her, i get so mad. and when jo says she needs to get away after she's rejected laurie, and then amy turns round and says she's going to france with aunt march - talk about tactless! she must have known jo had always wanted to go on that trip, so she could have waited til a more opportune moment to tell her. and i'd never say she was elegant - true elegance should be natural, but i think amy's just playing a part to get where she wants to be. sorry, rant over. amy's just one of those literary characters that i've always disliked, right from childhood. susan pevensie's another.

i love this movie....i use to watch it alot and then i forgot about it and just recently i got the dvd and now watching it again....

i've always thought it was kinda sad that beth was just kind of in the backround, she didn't say much and when she had her screen time it was when she was sick....which makes even sader.

^ i do have to agree that amy was kind of a brat....i hate the part where she burns the manuscript and the trip thing was bad timeing too.

I, too, from the movie alone, dislike Amy for her selfish and spoiled nature, she was a dreamer, but why couldn't she have dreamed for love and not for money? From the movie I felt she and Laurie ended up marrying for all the wrong reasons, they were not true to their own hearts, or if they were true---how wicked those hearts were. Laurie I felt married her possibly just to get back at Jo for not accepting his proposal, and to finally be part of the March family---and Amy accepted his proposal for his 200,000 a year (is that right?). I saw no spark between them, and I kind of... really felt sad for them.

"I always knew I would not end up marrying a pauper." I wanted her to realize that living poor didn't matter as long as you were happy, but if being poor pended so much on her happiness does this mean she just grew up wanting materialistic things more than her own family who have learned the beauty of life and not money?

I LOVE Little Women, the '90s version. Though I have to say that I'm much more of a Laurie/Jo shipper than a Friedrich/Jo shipper.

I think just like Pride and Prejudice, Little Women has actually benifited from having three adaptations.

I have seen them all, and in all of them there are things I like and things I don't like, which I think is quite healthy as some adaptations are just awful.

It's also rather unique that all three, did really well to capture the things I wanted most (Jo, Laurie, Freiderich, Beth, family values) and that each one has added a part of the book that the others didn't. So in a way, the more adaptations the more of the book you actually see on screen. Albeit, in different decades with different actors. :P

The majority of the Little Women seem to find Jo/Laurie more appealing, but perhaps that's just the power of Christian Bale's beautiful pouty face? 8D

I've never been able to see Katharine Hepburn's Little Women, JF. I've seen a few other versions on TV, but never her's for some reason!

XD Well I was very much a Jo/Laurie shipper when I saw the Katharine Hepburn version and even more so when I read the book. Like Christine/Phantom Christine/Raoul, I like both but for different reasons. Although I lean towards Frederich thanks to the newer version.

I've not seen it now for over 6 years. I just hope I like it as much as I remember. :P

lol, I've mostly ever leaned towards Jo/Bhaer in most of the versions. In the 1994 version definitely, and in the original books (although I wish Bhaer made more of an appearance).

There was another older version that I saw that I also liked Jo/Bhaer instead of Jo/Laurie. So, I'm not sure, lol. I suppose Jo/Laurie didn't really make sense to me.
