Sorry, Darky. I'll edit it and make it shorter :D

Anyway, they can't leave out the whole "God is evil" theme. I mean, the movie's going to be nothing without it, so it would be illogical to get rid of it altogether. Yes, admittedly they can be stupid, but they can't be so thick as that. If anything, they'll most probably water it down a bit, which is still stupid and extremely objectionable, but hey.

Yeah, let's hope His Dark Materials doesn't become a disaster like Eragon.

In a forum that I found, we're still waiting for confirmation about the exactly what role religion (I might as well reveal it) will play. But there is an initial report about the scene where Lyra stops Asriel from being poisoned and they have a small chat. It's something like Lyra asking Asriel what will the Magisterium think of his work and Asriel replies they'll denounce him as an apostate. Lyra, being a little girl after all, asks what apostate means, and Asriel, being the sarcastic, superior, cold lord he is, answers it means I won't be getting any Christmas cards. For those that don't know what an apostate is, it's someone who renounces their religion. Include the little remark about Christmas cards, I think religion might have a role in it.

Well, for those that still expect religion to be in it, it won't be in it. This article will explain all of it:
http://www.hisdarkmaterials.org/news/his-dark-materials-movies/item/why-their-dark-materials-might-not-be-your-dark-materials

Though how exactly they'll talk about the Authority is unknown. Maybe they'll make him like a god figure like Stalin or Big Brother.

Oooh, thanks for that link, Caunion. The article is very interesting. It's cleared a lot of things up as well.

I'm glad that they're approaching the film in that way... instead of fighting against religion, it's fighting against oppression and fighting for freedom... which was what the book did anyway. I like how they used Dust as an allegory: Dust is wisdom, and the Magisterium wants to get rid of Dust, so they want to get rid of wisdom. So my getting rid of that, they can have total power.

It all falls into place. But still, lots of people are going to take offense from it, and insist that it's all about Christianity :annoyed:

Yes but what about the sequels? Lyra is supposed to be "Eve". And Lyra and Will falling in love is supposed to be the "Fall". Whose grace is there to fall from if the Authority isn't a deity. It will be interesting how the filmmakers will make up for this.

I have a feeling that they'll figure it out. I just don't know how...

Truthfully, I can't remember anything from the next two books other then the elephant people, the specters and the terrible ending. :P I'd rather be blissfully unaware...

i remember creating a dorky song because of the ending when i first read it... and i didn't understand what they were talking about in the article, anyone care to expain.

And if you guys wish to discuss the religious aspects of the book feel free to Pm for a conversation. I view the Magisterium(sp) as christianity, wholey and full heartedly, thats what made the books great for me.

Well they're going to make the Magisterium something like a totalitarian government.

No problem, Dark.

I've also found a gallery of His Dark Materials stills. Some of them are a bit old but they are some new things here:

http://www.accesshollywood.com/photos/gallery/ah550.shtml

Everything looks good except the concept art of the armored bear.
