SPOILERS!

I really, really, really, really can't put into words my hatred for the storyline with William. It seems he was used simply to show "look we have a war casuality as well!". I'm not sure why it wasn't enough that Matthew is never going to walk again or have children (maybe... I can see that perhaps changing) without having poor, sweet, cheerful William dying.

I've never liked the fact poor Daisy was pushed onto him. And I felt very, very sorry for her for having to marry him such as it was. But even so, the Daisy/William storyline could have been played out to much better effect if William had received an injury that both threatened his career at Downton (say a severly damaged arm or leg) AND the operation was a dangerous one, with a good chance he might not survive (especially if the operation had to be done now or he'd lose the arm and he had something wrong with his chest as well) and THEN he could still have managed to get Daisy to marry him on the basis he might die... and then when he survived that's what the Daisy/William storyline would really have got going.

To be honest, I'd rather Matthew had died than William. I'm also not happy that considering he was you know DYING, there was not more reflective moments from the people he LIVED and WORKED with or more said about him other than "he's dying". Take the screen time away from the tart Ethel and the Major and at least have him mentioned more...

I'm still in denial really. When we first heard that he was fatally wounded I thought "nah, there's an hour left yet", which then gradually turned to "nah, there's 40 minutes left yet". It was only when the subtitles informed me *struggles to breathe/wheezes* that it actually sunk in. :'(

SPOILERS!!!

Gah, HONESTLY, I am sick of the way this show treats Edith. Sure, her sisters are not having an easy time either, but at least they're troubles revolve around the same man. Everytime Edith shows any happiness or freedom, then something snatches it away. I loved the idea of her finding her long lost love again, and I thought Patrick would be an interesting plot for longer than one hour! Seriously, he had better turn up again or there will be bother.

And for Pete's sake, what else can go wrong with Bates and Anna's romance? Now he's going to be a murder suspect!! I think this storyline is really being done to death.

But apart from that, great episode. :P

*skips in with a blindfold to avoid spoilers*

So, tonight they aired the first episode of season 2 in the US! I don't know how many episodes you lucky Brits have gotten already, but this was my first revisit to Downton in what seems like centuries. And I've decided I want a William in my life. I just want to snatch him out of the television and run away with him.

My mom and I were keeping a running tally of characters we wanted to smack across the face. It pretty much contained almost every single character by the time the episode was done. I don't know how they do it--I adore the show so much but I actively dislike so many characters.

I kept thinking of War Horse during every single battle scene. In fact, the first thing I said during the trench scene was, "If I see a horse, I'm leaving." And oh my gosh that gives me an idea for a Downton/War Horse crossover fic

We have finished series 2 in the UK, about 2 months ago at least and have already had the Christmas special.

Series 2 was no way near as good as series 1, but the Christmas special gives me a great deal of hope for series 3, as the special was just like the old days. Well written and well paced.

Please please please write that I would cherish it and write fanfic of your fanfic and draw fanart or something. :P

Anyway, re: characters I want to punch--there are many of them, yes.
And you know who's at the top of my list after watching tonight? Yes, unpopular opinion here, it's Branson.

Stop. Stalking. Sybil.

See, I do like Sybil. I love that she wants to be helpful, and be her own person. And what's Branson doing to help her with that goal? Nothing. He's too overbearing. That's not romantic, that's creepy. Let her make her own decisions; she's clearly capable of it.

Agh. I just hate when decent female characters are ruined by their controlling boyfriends/husbands/whatever. Can't Sybil have her own life unrelated to male interference?

Sorry, that rant's been building up for a while now. I don't really hate their relationship; just the way it's written.

On another note, people need to stop hating Thomas because he's beautiful because he's such an interesting, complex character and he seriously needs more screentime. I want a spinoff about the Thomas/O'Brien/Cora gossip club, or Thomas/Edward/Sybil Hospital Funtimes. Either of these would be quality entertainment.

There will be spoilers.

I agree. I think they just tried to cover too much time in series 2, but they didn't write accordingly. Two years went by? Well, we're still feeling exactly as we were in the last episode!

Which is one of the problems I have with Sybil/Branson. I really liked them in series 1, but then they became a couple that just met in the garage to talk about how they maybe kinda sorta might like one another. Or something. Also, yeah, Branson doesn't quite get it about Sybil. And their relationship really needed to be developed properly.

I really detest Thomas, but because of his character. I find him fascinating as well, I just don't like him. Though now with him being valet and everything...I really wonder what all is going on in his head.

Now if I could maybe come up with a half-decent plot that doesn't involve just inserting my War Horse OC into the mix...XD I'll brainstorm on it!

Agreed, although I like Branson. Now I'm afraid that he's going to join up with the army to prove his love for Sybil or something mad like that. What she needs to do is give him a little dose of reality. I can picture them actually having a hilariously-funny-yet-awesome-because-I-think-they're-both-very-opinionated argument at some point.

See, that just gave me a mental image of Thomas, Sybil, and Edward sitting in the hospital playing Monopoly. Or Truth Or Dare. Which is decidedly not fanfic material, but amusing to think about. I dunno, Thomas bothers me not because he's a jerk, but because he's so reckless. His whole SPOILER "I'm gonna get myself shot so I can go home" thing was so stupid I wanted to shake him. Yes, war is hell; yes, I can understand on some level why he did it, but he could have gotten killed as opposed to just that nasty hole in his hand. Hopefully someone can knock some sense into that boy soon so I can enjoy him a little more as a character.

This is confusing me. How come some of you have seen series 2 and some haven't? Do I detect teh internet downloading here? :P

I guess I'll have to be careful what I say as some obviously won't want to read certain things. :teehee:

Basically, I don't hate any of the characters, Thomas and O'Brien are boo-hiss characters and I don't think I could *hate* them as such. I think O'Brien is definitely suffering thanks to her killing Cora's baby and starting trouble for Mary, so I'm OK as long as she is tormented. :P I just think the writing of certain characters and situations (Bates/Anna Bates/Anna/Trouble Bates/Anna/Happy Bates/Anna/Unhappy Bates/Anna/Happy) was way overdone, or prolonged or just made unrealistic. And the way he's been treating Edith hasn't helped matters. (Thank you Christmas special!)

I think Julian Fellowes was so lucky to get a sleeper hit with series 1, he wrote what he wanted and was in no way subconsciously writing to please others, be it producers or fans. With series 2, I think he'd been reading too many ideas from people and pushed the series into places it shouldn't have gone. When series 2 was almost done airing in the UK, the Christmas special was about to begin filming. I think he had enough time to read the critiscm from the fans and add or amend stuff for the Christmas special, as I was really meh about it, and then I watched it and it was just so well done, it was glorious.

Which made me feel better about the fact that I got the book and a jigsaw for Christmas when I was feeling down about series 2. :P

JF, I practically live on the internet. Of course I'm going to find the episodes online so that I don't get spoiled like crazy before they come out here.

I actually thought he treated Edith pretty well throughout the series, quite honestly. I started to feel sorry for her and care by the end, which is a big jump.

Oh! Oh! Speaking of Edith, Laura Carmichael was in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. which has nothing to do with this, but I was really excited to see her and you guys would be the only other ones to appreciate it.

They just won the Golden Globe for best Mini-series or TV movie! Like we had any doubt that that would happen. :P

Of course it won. The drama, you guys. I'm always on the edge of my seat when they're trying to figure out how they're going to serve dinner with no footmen. So nerve-wracking! So suspenseful! :P

^ lol! They do such a great job of portraying what it means to them to have to serve dinner without a footman, though. They're clinging desperately to a disappearing world! It's really sad, if you think about it.

While I'm here, I do have one thing to say about the second episode which just aired last Sunday here. That long take of the soldiers coming into Downton was amazing.

You have no idea how much I love Downton Abbey.

This pretty much sums up how I was when the Christmas special started:

Anyway, all the things I want to say about the Christmas special I have on my tumblr so I'll link to them. Warning, they contain spoilers (obviously) but may also contain swear words. :)

This pretty much sums up my feelings about the conversation between Robert and Mary: http://wewillwalkinbitterrain.tumblr.co ... 4922325998

This is a hilarious recap of the episode: http://wewillwalkinbitterrain.tumblr.co ... 4922291682

OK, everybody who loves Downton NEEDS to watch this. IT DOES NOT CONTAIN ANY SPOILERS. http://wewillwalkinbitterrain.tumblr.co ... 5009621812

Oh and this is the best bit from the Behind the Scenes episode:

And now this post had made me want to change my spouse in the family trees....
