Oh gosh, yes. The Joker has got to be one of Heath Ledger's defining roles, just like it was Jack Nicholson's.

And yay for Bat-Cycle.

I was somewhat skeptical of Heath Ledgers casting and even some of the early pics of him looked a little off for me. But...I am now completely won over. He IS the Joker. He captures the essence of the character perfectly.

Christopher Nolan deserves some serious kudos for finally creating a Batman that is worthy of his comic counterpart. There has been no movie or tv version of Batman that has come close up until now.

In Nolan We Trust!

I just saw the trailer to it. My GOD, am I impressed. The Joker was done so beautifully. His voice...my god, it was great. It was FANTASTIC!

And you're right. Christopher Nolan should definitely get Best Director. His other movies, if you haven't seen them, are just great! He has such a unique way of directing.

I was kind of rooting for Sean Penn to be the Joker, but I'd settle and see Heath Ledger's performance. I'm curious to see how it turns out. He does have the Joker smirk down.

I wasn't really referring to kudos in terms of Oscar, not that he's not worthy of such an accolade. But when I meant kudos, I meant for finally getting everything right in terms of Batman.

Tim Burton did an admirable job, but his casting was flawed. I mean...Beetlejuice as the playboy billionaire? Just didn't work for me.
Jack Nicholsons 'attempt' at the Joker was just so incredibly bad. It was just Jack going out there and being slightly wacky. The Joker is one of the most depraved villains in comic book history. Though one thing he did get right was Catwoman. Michelle Pfieffer was so delicious in the role I could forgive the blonde hair.

Christopher Nolan has his casting so bang on.
Christian Bale juggles both sides of Batmans character perfectly.
Michael Caine is just wonderful as Alfred.
Cillian Murphy was a fantastic Crane/Scarecrow.
Not to mention Morgan Freeman and Rutger Hauer. Nolans only real casting weak point was Katie Holmes, though I didn't find her as offensive as a lot of other people did.

Now you have Heath as The Joker and even from the trailer you can tell he has it. The characterisation of The Joker has almost literally jumped off the pages of the comic book. I ate the hugest slice of humble pie after watching that trailer. The Dark Knight is going to be EPIC!

*cough* and that was a comic book geeks mini-rant/squee

I have to agree with you Phoenix about the castinhg of Batman Begins. If you take out Holmes, it is one of the most perfect casts ever (and I love the fact nearly all of the main characters are British :P). She was just nothing to me, perhaps it was her character and the way it was written for the film, but she just didn't do anything for me at all.

*bounces* I am getting very excited for this film. When does it come out in the UK?

I guess we'll see if it was Katie's fault or it's just a character flaw with Maggie Gyllenhaal now in the role.

According to IMDB the UK release date is July 25th.

Well, I saw a trailer leaked a couple months ago. Well, I can't say I saw anything. ;) It was mainly audio. But I kind of freaked when I saw it. :P Just the way Heath sounded as the Joker, I KNEW it was gonna be good.

Then I saw this trailer. And HURRAY!!!

:bounce:

I'm REALLY excited for it. And besides Ms Holmes in Batman Begins, I trust Nolan completely in casting. I agree with Ms JF here, that besides Holmes, the cast is PERFECT. I do love the fact that to revive the Batman films, they've recruited the British. XD Except for Heath...who is in fact...Austrailian. :P But whatever...a colony of the Brits. XD

And everything Oh-Wise-Phoenix has said is exactly what I'm thinking. Christian Bale just embodies Bruce Wayne/Batman. I'll always be partial to Michael Keaton, mainly because I grew up with him as the movie Batman...but Christian Bale I think DEFINES Bruce.

And I'm REALLY excited to see the cast return. ESPECIALLY Gary Oldman!! HURRAY!! I love him!! :) And I'm excited to see Maggie Gyllenhaal (sp?). I've seen a lot of her work, and she's a very promising, VERY talented actress. Should be good.

And yes, it IS gonna be EPIC. :D

Well, I liked Jack Nicholson's Joker. :p But I'm not a comic book buff, so I don't know.

But I have to agree that Katie Holmes felt a bit awkward in Batman Begins.

@ Phoenix - Gah, July so long. *rubs hands together* Ooh, it's going to be a good year for me and going to the cinema. :teehee:

@ Monty - Yay for the colonials! *waves flag*

Gary Oldman is LOVE.

@ Kitoky - She doesn't didn't feel right to me. Everyone else you could believe but she was just... meh...

[I'm talking about the Joker from the comic books below, so if you don't want to know about him... beware!]

I'm not a comic book buff either, but I read all about the Joker and Wiki and the look of this Joker makes sense. I'm only used to the Caesar Romero Joker from the TV series and he looks like he was make-up on, so I was a bit wary about this Joker. But according to Wiki, the Joker fell into a vat of chemicals which made his hair go green, his face became bleached and his lips red. So it's not going to look like carefully applied face paint! And I want to see Harley-Quinn!

[I may just have to read all the Batman pages on Wiki :teehee:]

Gary Oldman is indeed pure love! He's SO wonderful, and he plays Gordon SO wonderfully. :)

Admittedly, I haven't been reading the comics lately. Not for quite a while, actually. Which is somewhat sad. :P
But from the look of this Joker, I'd say Nolan knows what he's doing. *nod nod* Growing up, Batman was the only comic I read. Ha ha ha ha....and I watched the shows and movies. I actually had a Batman themed birthday party with a cake and everything....but I'm going off on some wild tangent. :P
From what I remember, I think fans of the comics are going to be okay with Heath and Nolan's version. Like Oh-Wise-Phoenix said, seeing him was like reading the comics again.

It's so strange that I have near complete faith in Nolan for this Batman legacy. :P But I think he's proven himself....and I think with what we've seen of the Joker, he'll definately shine with such an iconic villian.

Man, I REALLY need to break out my Batman comics again. Such memories. XD

I got some serious CHILLS when I saw the trailer and heard the laughter of the Joker for the first time. Absolutely spot on! Better than I'd hoped it would be. Heath looks and sounds beyond amazing. I totally agree with muh wee Stimpy, this movie is going to be so EPIC!

Is this the part where I get to gloat for never having any doubts about Heath's casting? :P Now that I've seen the trailer, he is even more perfect than I thought he'd be.

I'm so excited about this movie.

Yeah, it was the Joker's laugh that got me. As soon as I heard it, I was like "That's the Joker we've waiting for."
