Mary Sue is a name used to describe some characters, usually in role-plays or fanfictions. She represent characters (usually girls) Who have the damsel in distress attitude. Also who aren't very in depth and have goofy, stupid, and ironic parts in stories that just so happen to work, and everything just so happens to come out right. Mary-sue could also have a wierd name...usually the Mary sue characters also fall desperatly in love with someone, and are just totally sugar-coated and stupid. Kind of like in all those blonde jokes...the blonde would be Mary Sue.....does that make sense?

Mary Sues can also be the unrealistically skilled females in a story. It's one thing to have a young woman who can wield a sword to defend herself and others; it's another to have a young woman who can singlehandedly ward off an entire legion of dark forces and still come out of it looking pretty.

Okay, so that's a bit of an exaggeration (though I have seen Mary Sues that bad), but you get the idea. Basically, it's a female who's just way too perfect and convenient to be real. (The male version of this is generally called either Marty Sam or Gary Stu)

Wow! you people make exelent points! I really don't have anything to add right now(save applauding you again, potr) I will say that If you say you dilike the movie, abut havn't seen it yet, please, please go see it! It is much eiseier to either fight for or oppose somthing if you know what you are talking about. when I first saw the potc commercial I thought it sounded like a very stupid move...but then again when I first heard of "The Lord of the Rings" I thought it sounded like a very, very stupid movie. now I love both(although you can't beat first love and pirates will never overtake lotr) and DMC has made it all the better. really, if you are going to fight, know what you are saying.

(about Mary Sues, here is a link to "The Lay of Mary Sue and Her Marty Sam:

Thankyouthankyouthankyou.... For a second I thought my thread was going Pro-PotC...

And it's great that you guys like all the characters... but my opinion isn't changing.

Not trying to change your opinion, Shadowcat. You're completely entitled to think whatever you want. I'm merely trying to understand why you hate it so much.

Eowyn is NOT a mary sue, in the book or movie. Yes, I agree with Arwen being a mary sue in the movie, but you can blame Pete on that, he could have done a better job with some things...

Elizabeth
    - Father is the governor of Port Royal
    - Lost her mother at an early age
    - Dresses up and fulfills her social obligations, but doesn't like it
    - Fiercely independent young woman capable of thinking for herself
    - Very intelligent
    - Very beautiful
    - Despite her role as the governor's daughter, is very gifted with a sword (and a very fast learner, apparently)
    - Is part of a major love triangle (Will/Elizabeth/Jack)
    - Disguises herself as a male so that she can join in the fight
    - Despite being a well-known individual and very obviously female, manages to fool everyone, even someone who knows her

Eowyn
    - Uncle (and guardian) is the king of Rohan
    - Lost her mother at the age of 7
    - Plays the role of fair maiden, but doesn't like it
    - Fiercely independent young woman capable of thinking for herself
    - Very intelligent
    - Very beautiful
    - Despite being a lady of the court, is very gifted with a sword
    - Is part of a major love triangle [though one part is unreciprocated] (Faramir/Eowyn/Aragorn)
    - Disguises herself as a male so she can join in the fight
    - Despite being a well-known person and very obviously female, manages to fool everyone, even several people who know her

Mind you, I still love both characters. I don't care if you call Elizabeth a Sue (because she is), but you can't exclude Eowyn from that title. She's every bit as much of a Sue as Elizabeth is. ;)

Yes, and so are people like Leia, Padme, Princess Buttercup(to some extent), Arya, almost all the Disney Princesses, and several other popular characters. There are plenty of strong females in the world, so it's only natural that we should have them in fiction. In fact, several people I know would be Mary Sues if they were in stories, myself included.

^ Hmm..yes but I think to a certain extent Keira Knightley has made Elizabeth to be a slightly annoying character. Whatever parallels you can find between other female characters in cinema, it has to be said, that some are going to be more annoying than others. Eowyn isn't annoying, Elizabeth can be. And like Will Turner's faults, I think it's because of the actor, and not the character.

I guess I would like Elizabeth more if she was played by someone else.

Yes, I think so too.

It's the strength of the film alone and of course, Jack Sparrow, that I actually love. When I say I love Pirates it's probably only about 70% of it I love, but that 70% (anything that isn't Will % Elizabeth and a few dodgy scenes) is enough for Pirates not to be spoilt for me.

Re elvishjedipirate's post: I think Mary-Sues are a part of literature too, don't get me wrong. But you can't say one is a Mary-Sue solely because she annoys you and then say another one isn't because she doesn't. That's more of a matter of preference.

And as a fanatic W/E shipper...and an adoring fan of Will in general...I have nothing else to add :D

I cannot believe my eyes! A pirate hate thread. *sobs* Pirates are awesome! Just because you don't like them doesn't mean you have to call them stupid and act like a three year old. It's quite alright if you don't like potc, that's your own opinion. I happen to love the the movies and I really hope they make another after AWE. AWE sounds like the last movie though. Sadly.

^Actually, I didn't call them stupid. I called them drunk, annoying, and boring.

And if AWE is the last one... that's the best news I've heard all day.
