I love the idea! I don't know Penelope Cruz's work very well, except that she won an Oscar, but Florida was a Spanish colony, after all, so I think a Spanish leading lady would fit right in. I only hope her character is good.

My feelings about her are mixed... she's not someone I don't like, but I'm not crazy about her either. Since she's supposed to be something of Jack's "Equal", it looks like we'll be seeing a lady version of our favorite pirate captain? I dunno, it's too early to tell, and not to mention they're keeping everything underwraps, so we're gonna have to find us some patience and wait.
I don't want to hate on her already, but she'd better bring a good performance to the screen or this movie is going to suck majorly. I can't take another Elizabeth running around...

Like Ara my feelings on this are mixed.... one part of me says "meeehhhhh" and another part says.... I don't know what it says. lol I really don't want to see a second Jack Sparrow running around.  I'd actually prefer they didn't bring in any new characters. I mean, I know her character could be totally epic and whatnot but, I dunno.

Anyone hear about Ian McShane playing Blackbeard? I'm not so sure about them adding Blackbeard. It seems like such a pirate cliché! But it also seems well-cast. McShane just screams "BLACKBEARD" to me.  _________________

Who said Cruz???
I love Penelope Cruz, such a talented actor, beautiful to watch and with a strong personality and a fragile touch as if she's always on the verge of insanity. I think she's perfect for that role their outline. I didn't plan on watching the new PotC - for many of the reasons you all stated - but perhaps if Cruz gets to play a nice part with some substance it would be nice to watch her in an adventure/action movie.  _________________ >>Be the change you wish to see in the world<<

Hm, until this point I'd never heard of Ian McShane, but Google Images is making me faithful in him already. He definitely has a "Blackbeard" look to him and I can't wait to see how the costumers bring that out. <3
Penelope is still bothering me a bit, but I guess it could be totally worse (remember those rumors about Zac Efron?  ) so I don't know how I'll feel about her after I've seen OST. If she's anything like Elizabeth, then you can forget about it.
This especially has me worried:
IMDB wrote: Appearing at ShoWest, Bruckheimer tells MTV News that "she brings a lot of humor to it. And the fact that she's so feisty." He also confirmed that there will be "a little romance between [Depp's] Captain Jack and the character that Penelope plays."
Specifically the last sentence. This is EXACTLY what they did with Elizabeth and it totally ruined the movie for me. 
And it says Cruz will be <b>THE DAUGHTER OF BLACKBEARD</b>.  Am I the only one who finds this shocking?!

^I'm still excited about seeing it; the only thing that might ruin it for me is Penelope's performance, as I stated before.
I'm kinda happy about them throwing in Blackbeard actually, as I'd love to see their take on him. And it also sorta is cool to see real and fictional merge for once in PotC, as far as the pirates go. I'd love to see them add Anne Bonney and Mary Read as well, but I can't ask for everything.

I dunno, I'm still very iffy... doesn't really feel like PotC to me at this point. *shrugs* And having 2 billion Jack-like people running around, falling in love and whatnot does not make it more enticing. But we'll have to see....

Maybe I'm just in one of those moods where the nice weather outside has reminded me of the Caribbean and thus made me excited about PotC again. And reading through old roleplays has just fueled my fire moreso.

Oh Man I'm so so so behind on Rumors for this!!! I thought all we knew about it was there was gonna be No Will (:( ) no Elizabeth and No Russel Brand as Jack's Brother but...

I'm kinda unsure whether I'm really excited or not though, from everything I've heard this ones gonna be specifically about Jack, and I'm really scared that a whole 2 hours + of soley Jack is gonna be a bit like a Shrek movie that was filled with Donkey scenes- it could be really really annoying. I think I feel that way becuase Will to me was always the "straight man" counterbalance to Jack's craziness, AWE sort of erased all the realitvely normal characters like Will, Elizabeth, Norrington, Will Sr and Cutler Beckett, by the end of the story, so all the flamboyant crazy characters are left.
Still I agree that Anamarie should return!! What the Hell Happened to her?? She was the best female character of the whole darn series!

This makes me sad, it would have been completely EPIC. Ohwell, I have my Geoffrey Rush/Barbossa. I guess I'll be greedy if I ask for any more. To be honest he's the only reason I'll be going to see it.

Ha ha, a bit harsh, JF? lol
I wouldn't mind if he stuck to the script; I mean his crazy appearence is easy to liken to Jack's own and I think he would be funny... yet I understand how some people (like Goatcloset) could find him annoying. 
And Lothy, I will be doing the exact same thing as you; picturing all of the OC's in the background scenes of the movie. 
I wholeheartedly agree that they will need to start finding some serious characters if this is going to work; and it better not be centered completely around Jack and Barbossa bickering or it will get really old really fast.

Haha I agree with JF: Russell Brand is a complete foul mouthed waste of space, but it does disapoint me he isn't in the film anymore, I mean he pretty much IS a real life Jack Sparrow (along with Keith Richards I guess but he's already been Pirate-ified) and I hope they don't get some mediocre Brand-esque wanna be to replace him. I don't think it would really matter than his acting capabilities are kinda rubbish, he'd just have to prance about and be himself anyway.
I hope Penelope Cruz's character is serious, I don't thin I've seen enough of her films to make a propper judgement (the only thing I can picture her in is a makeup advert... oops) but she seems more a serious, but elegant type of actress, I think it'd be way to camp if she was yet another crazy pirate- she seems too sophisticated (maybe I've seen that makeup advert too many times lol!)
BTW has anyone heard whether Pintel and Ragetti will be in it atall, I love them
also: I found this article online the other day- I didn't read it but the title made me giggle
EDIT: ooook I feel really stupid, I've only just realised that Anamaria was palyed by Zoe Saldana aka Uhura aka Neytiri... She's a big actress now and SURELY thats a reason to bring her back (though tbh ZS is a bit annoying in rl) damn you PotC _________________

I mean... seriously. At this point the only thing I am even remotely excited about is seeing Geoffrey Rush/Barbossa back.
