Hehe, Bootstrap would a closer guess in terms of relationship.
Ooh, I also have written a fanfiction with spoilers for the third film, you can find it here...

Note to everyone: Unlike my fanfic that was only minorly spoilerish, erica's revolves around a MAJOR plot point, so don't read if you don't want to know. (Though I must say, it's very talented writing!)

I just read those pages from the first draft of POTC 3's script, and I agree with you, Ericadawn. I really, really don't like the fate they gave Norrington! And the character they had do it! It's just not right! I was hoping both these characters would have a better fate than the one they're given in this draft!
In terms of Norrington dying, even though I still wouldn't like it, I'd dislike it somewhat less if it was a more "noble" death (e.g. he dies while getting rid of Beckett, who doesn't survive either), as PoTR said. But having him die the way he does in this draft just seems to me like only a slight bit more time is spent developing his character, but then he's just "taken out of the picture", literally, because there's no more use for him in the plot. Sounds an awful lot like what they did with Anamaria, although even the reason for that makes more sense than this ! It just seems like such a waste of a great character !
As for what they did with Bootstrap Bill, well, from what little we know about him, it seems way out of character for him to lash out at the first thing he sees. I know he's becoming less and less human as time goes on because of the altered state (physical and mental) he's been forced to live in, but that's just too far a step off the deep end for me! His transformation into a creature "of the sea" is gradual, so the corresponding change in his mental state should be just as gradual, IMO. Having him do such an inhuman thing right off the bat is too rapid a change, at least to me.
The only hope I'm holding onto is that because this was/is an early/first draft, both that situation and the character arcs of both Norry and Bootstrap Bill have changed significantly since it was written.
Alexis

Wait...what did they do to Anamaria?!
*sighs* This is so confusing. Perhaps I should just wait the 10 days...
(And how do we know this is the script used for the movie? It could be a very early draft.)

I sure hope it's an early draft ... the story wouldn't be all that great if it happened that way ... well it would but it would be really depressing...

SPOILER WARNING (you'd do well to put one over your post as well, mate )
See, as much as I dislike it, I do think it makes sense. Even toward the middle of DMC, when Will meets him, Bootstrap already has to be reminded of who Barbossa was. I like his line there, though, because it gives a really good insight as to what happens to those who serve on the Dutchman: "It's the gift and the lie given by Jones. You join the crew and think you've cheated the powers, but it's not reprieval you've found. It's oblivion. Losing what you were, bit by bit, til you end up like poor Wyvern here..." That's what has been happening to Bootstrap all through DMC and P3, but I wouldn't say it's gradual. Judging by the pictures I've seen, he gets progressively worse each time we see him. When he talks to Jack, the starfish is just beginning to form on the side of this face, and he clearly remembers the mutiny (he even apologizes for it). By the time Will sees him, it's almost completely formed, and he hardly even remembers Barbossa or the mutiny. If that much can happen over only a few days, I'd imagine that by the time P3 rolls around (and we're not sure of the exact timing- we just know it's long enough for the "heroes" to get a ship and form a plan, and long enough for Beckett to gain complete control over Davy Jones and the seas), Bootstrap will have slipped even further down the path to inhumanity. I'm still not convinced that he won't somewhat redeem himself, though. If Darth Vader can break through over 20 years of Palpatine's brainwashing to save his son, why can't Bootstrap act similarly? I just have a gut feeling that he will (kinda like I had a gut feeling that Norrington would get killed off).

I still think all of the spoilers are confusing. And sort of disappointing, too. I really liked how the first movie ended. It would have made a fine stand-alone. But I'm concerned about the sequels...that because of the popularity of the first movie, the new ones won't be at the same level... I mean, I really hope they will, I'm just scared.

Actually, I did just remember a difference from the script and what was filmed, according to an extra Elizabeth and James hug and embrace upon their reunion but the script makes it quite clear that she hates him. It doesn't mention a hug, does it?
