...good question...we know about his love, so maybe he took up the beign the Captain of the Dutchman after the original Captain did his sentence on the ship or something...no real idea though.

Supposedly it'll be explained in more detail when the third film comes out, but right now we know very little about it all.

I think we found out more about Jack really. We now know that he wasn;t the Captain of the Pearl because of ny Pirate skills but because he was given it by Jones. I also wonder if because he was associated with Tia and if he knew what she was capable of, whether he realised when he was going to be killed by the Kraken that he may as well die as it' won't be permeant?

Actually, Jones didn't give it to him. He simply raised it from the depths after it was sunk.
It's a long story, but basically, Jack was once a merchant sailor in the employ of the East India Trading Company (headed by Beckett) and captain of a ship named the Wicked Wench. On one trip to Africa to get some "cargo" for trading, Jack changed his mind after making the trade and turned back to return said cargo. This made Beckett furious, so he ordered that the Wench be torched and sunk, and Jack be branded a pirate (hence his mark that he left on Jack). Jack was then thrown in prison, but he was so in love with his ship that he managed to escape ("You vanished from under the eyes of seven agents of the East India Company!") and swam out to sea to retrieve her from the depths. Obviously that's impossible, and eventually he became exhausted and started to drown. He then called on Davy Jones to save him, which he did. Jones made the deal that he would raise the Wench from the depths and let Jack be captain for thirteen years, in exchange for Jack's soul at the end of that time. Jack agreed, and the Wench was brought back up. The torching had left her wood a smoky black color, however, so Jack re-christened her the Black Pearl. He was captain for two years before the mutiny, and the rest, as we know, is history.

ok that makes sense...i think, at least i think it does...*reads agaiN8 ok ti does.
I wonder if Tia knew that Jack would die/go to purgatory...thats what i was wondering after i saw it the second time.
