My little sister thought Gandalf's name was Biblo, and Bilbo's name was Gandalf.
and after we saw the movie, we didnt know any of the charatcer's names, so Legolas we called "the guy with the bow and arrows" Aragorn "The guy with the sword who didnt die" and Boromir was "the guy with the sword that did die"
 oh boy..
lol.
thats a bit off topic, eh?

I like the PotC storyline, I just don't like most of the characters.
Elizabeth is so Mary Sue, I come close to throwing up every time she's on screen (which unfortunately is just about the whole movie). Will is boring, and he's got that whole stupid annoying noble thing going on that I hate. Jack is... tolerable at times... but it annoys me when he can't seem to decide whether he wants to be good or bad.
The only two characters I really like are Norrington *huggles banner* because even though his part is only secondary, he has more depth than the other characters (in my opinion.) and Barbossa cause you gotta love the baddies

Nice
I've had to explain to my little confuzzled sis that Aragorn is the brownharied guy that didn't die, Legolas is Orlando Bloom, Gimli is the guy with the beard, Pippin is the one that knocked the thing down the well, etc. It can get pretty annoying.

I thought the Ring was just a dream, and Frodo and Sam were really in Fangorn with Treebeard.
[No... Merry and Pip didn't exist for me]

Actually, I could NOT get Sam/Frodo vs. Merry/Pippin straight, and I though that Gandalf and Saruman were the same person, which made things entirely confusing.
Oh, yeah. My little sis had interesting nicknames for the characters. Legolas=the elf, Gimli=the dwarf, Aragorn=that hot guy, Merry/Pippin are interchangeable, as are Sauron and Saruman, and Eowyn and Arwen are both, apparently, named Earweyn.

Er...oops. Sorry about that.
So, back on topic. A lot of people were taling about PotC today, and it surprised me that I sort of took a negative stance. (Well, they were talking about the sequel.) Everyone's so excited for the third one and I'm...not.
*shrugs*

I think ending after DMC would have been good. I mean, Jack dies a heroic [sort of] death, and that leaves a good impression on him.

No...I wouldn't have been able to stand the tension going on between Will and Elizabeth! I would have literally gone insane wondering what happened to them...anyway. Nevermind. *gets down off W/E shipper soapbox and tiptoes out of thread*
Edit: Johnny's Fan, I believe potr meant she couldn't figure out which was Gimli and which was Legolas...but then, I'm only guessing.

I'm going to defend the girls you say that are Mary-Sues.No girl of Star Wars,Lord of the Rings,Pirates of the Caribbean,Harry Potter,Narnia,Teen Titans and Wicked is a Mary-Sue,ok?
Well, maybe movie Arwen,(we already know the reasons)and,to Wicked, maybe Dorothy(but only in the Wicked version;in Wizard of Oz she's alright).I hope I didn't offended anyone.Peace

Gee, this is all harsh stuff for a HUGE PotC and Will fan like myself! Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion but to me these movies are only second to LotR (and believe me I've seen a lot of movies ...I won't be shy about calling them epic. ). I'm sorry others haven't seen the quality in them... (and by they way... oh, my goodness I feel so bad for Will always getting beat up and people always saying he's a terrible character! If you actually pay attention he is an awesome character… he's smart, resourceful, kind, strong and he does (and figures out) a lot of sweet things! I'm won't mention his looks or his actor but his actual character is so very good and neat) Actually all the characters in PotC are very good and in-depth in their own way. And the storyline is amazing and it actually makes you think and contemplate the story…. And to me the longer time in DMC and AWE is all better! I mean why not give it to them since they had an amazing story to tell and they needed all that time to tell it?
I thought the visual effects of PotC (especially DMC and AWE) were absolutely stunning and the places it took you were amazing! It was a beautiful trip for your imagination (sure some of the things weren't and never could be true but that was what was so fun about it! You get to us your imagination! ) Also the storyline is so interact and beautifully put together and over all the characters are some of the best characters I've ever seen in a movie… they're so real and they ring so true.
but I will respect you're guys' opinions (and remember that people are each entitled to their own beliefs ) and leave it at that... sorry, I just had to say all that... my PotC-fan defensive nature kicked in there for a time. sorry.
So, yeah, a diehard PotC fan here to defend PotC and Will. And I'm proud to stand up for them!
anyway... *silently steps down and leaves*

Interesting thread... (I've read every post. Another boring Saturday night...)
Calloniel (PD) wrote: ...I won't be shy about calling them epic. ). Really? I wouldn't call this an epic at all. To me, an epic is something on a large scale, that goes deeper . Like potc, it's just fun. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But is there anything deeper to it? ForeverFrodo wrote: ~RinielAranel~ wrote: However I don't like how people have been advertising it as epic. I never thought of it that way. Epic is Star Wars, LotR, Narnia...Pirates is just fun! (Not to mention not all of the moral bumps are smoothed over, so its hard to become totally serious and involved in something epic when you're not sure which side you're rooting for.) However, the first movie played off of that emotion - not knowing whch side to root for. It kept you surprised and entertained. So, I like the first pirates as a good movie. The second (and third) are just trying to hard. *shrugs* Exactly my point. It is fun. The movie's got everything to be entertaining - the pretty girl, the hero who'd do anything for her, and the funny unconventional pirate. Plus, give it a bit of pirate romantic and an interesting curse - and that's it, basically. I don't want POTR to kill me, i know you can find more in it, but what was about to point out is that it is pure entertainment. There's no deeper emotional and moral quality in it. And hey, I loove PotC, it's one of my favourite movies, but nevertheless. It's not epic, as RA said. ^*Shrugs* Those are my thoughts, though much better expressed. Quote: (and by they way... oh, my goodness I feel so bad for Will always getting beat up and people always saying he's a terrible character! Will, (OB) plays the part of a pretty comman hero, imo. What's special about him? He loves a girl. he'll do anything for her. He needs to save her. He does. They end up together. Everyone's happy. There's nothing wrong with him (I like him - though OB's acting does get on my nerves sometimes, no offense. )... But I don't see what's so special or "in -depth" about him. (Or maybe it's just OB who makes me fell that way about him. I'm not sure about that one! )*Shrugs* I feel the same way about Elizabeth.
Now, Jack, he is an interesting, unique character. There really wouldn't be a movie without him. Or, at least the movie wouldn't have done as well. Who wants to see another Will-type hero? Or a Mary-Sue? But, when you have this more interesting colourful character, the movie becomes more appealing. And the other two fit become more interesting when put in a postition to deal with such a character!
Okay, so, imo, if you don't like the character of Jack, it makes sense that you don't like the movie. If you don't like his humour, or his rascally pirate-ness, then what's to like? And I can understand how it is possible to not like Jack. (Though I personally, love the character) There are moral problems with the character. Part of you does feel he should be behind bars for all the crimes he commited.
So, yeah, here are my thoughts. I love the movie for it's fun and entirtaining qualities. But I wouldn't call it an epic.
