Just wondering - what in your opinion makes a great movie?
For me, LotR gives me inspiration... to draw, to write, watch non stop and of course to read and post!
You guys?

(Would it be better to do this as a poll?)

A great movie must have a great plot, must be different from other movies, must have good and believable actors, a good director and has to inspire me and makes me think about it for a longer time.

A good movie...should be everything LOTR is.

Sorry, I had to say it! No, I'm kidding. In my opinion a good movie should be the right mix of action/adventure, humor, and (sometimes) romance, with likeable characters and a good, original story. Oh, and the actors/actresses should be good too (and it doesn't hurt if they're physically attractive either, lol).

As long as the script is being written well enough to convince me that thing existed or this event has happened or this character had a life like this in an impressive and different way. That movie is good

This thread isn't really about the LotR movies, is it? ;) I'll move it to the Movies & TV board. *moves*

A good film does not mean it has to be an original story. I've seen plenty of good westerns (for example) which are basically lawman vs outlaw, lawman with an outlaw past falls in love with local woman, lawman kills outlaw, lawman lives happily ever after.

A good film, has to have a good script and good actors. It doesn't have to leave you thinking about it for hours after you have seen it (if it does it's a bonus). A good film fills a couple of hours so you can "hm, that was well worth spending a few hours to watch".

A good film (by my standards) or one that I'll really enjoy...
-has interesting characters, each with their own story (yay, subplots). This way you can put yourself in many different people's shoes, and if there's enough people you'll almost certainly find someone to identify with.
-The story is somewhat complicated; it makes you think, and can keep you thinking afterwards. It should cover at least two hours; if a movie is really good, you don't want it to end. (Plus this is the time needed to fully develop the story.)
-It has good lines and interesting dialogue; can be funny, intuitive, or entertaining. It's something that takes a little while to dissect and is fun to listen to. You discover something new every time you watch the movie.
-Good music or soundtrack really makes a film more enjoyable. (PotO, PotC, LotR, narnia for example)
-teaches you something - there is a point to watching it
-but of course, it's entertaining too!
:)

To me personally, what appeals to me as a good movie...

....... A great plot. A plot that can be explained, a plot that can make sense, a plot that has true meaning in its events and its purpose.

...... CHARACTERS. GOOD characters. You must-must-must-must have characters that you can RELATE to that you can SYMPATHIZE with and that you can see yourself in THEIR shoes or admire them because we CAN'T see ourselves in their shoes.

...... Writers. Depending on the genre of the movie, you have to have good writers, you have to have those people behind the scenes creating the plot, creating the dialogue, creating what reflects off the screen to be GOOD.

I agree but Hollywood recently ignore the quality of good scripts written rather they try to benefit from the visual effects and so on. And the acting skills of actors are also needed greatly to make a movie watchful for not only one time but it should be watched more than once. I disagree if you talk about Good, Bad, Ugly. It was not just about outlaw against lawman. This is the main plot but the story which happens is a real adventure. This is what I believe.

To me there are several different aspects of what makes a great film:
  • PLOT/SCRIPT - It must have an interesting story to tell and tell it well. There must be good characters and a well developed dialogue!
  • VISUAL LOOK - It must be esthetically pleasing. The cinematography must be top notch. I also prefer enhanced vibrant or dreamy colors/graded colors (e.g. LotR, The Illusionist, A Very Long Engagement etc). If the film features special effects those need to be top notch as well (you shouldn't be able to tell they are special effects)
  • ACTING - If the acting isn't there the film lacks its heart. Like special effects, you shouldn't be able to notice there is acting going on but that you're actually watching a real moment out of somebody's life. An actor needs to be convincing or you won't buy it!
  • MUSIC - Being the major score freak that I am, a film simply needs to have a great score. If the acting is the heart of the film, the music is the very soul!
I also prefer a film in the wide screen aspect ratio (2:35.1)!

A great movie raises questions and only answers about one half to two thirds of 'em.

It also has good characterzation, a great, captivating plot, originality, a meaning, usually, and elements from at least three other good films.

*lol* The last bit's a joke, but pretty true...

a good movie should be interesting and captivating enough to have u thinking about it for days after(or longer if its a particularly good movie say....LotR ;).having good actors and directors and writers and stuff is always a good idea too.
