@ PD - Ok, well I may well be wrong here, but I'm only going by how I am interpreting the trailer but I think that basically the story from the trailer seems to suggest that Johnny Depp's character Benjamin Barker, was happily married to a beautiful wife and they had a beautiful baby daughter. Then along comes Judge Turpin, presumably jealous of Benjamin, and in love with the wife. He has him arrested and Benjamin spends 15 years in prison, and he expects to find a wife and daughter waiting for him. The wife appears to be dead (it is hinted that Judge Turpin was to blame for this). Helena Bonham Carter, plays Mrs, Lovett a baker, and she knows about Benjamin and what happened to him. When Benjamin comes out, he wants revenge on those who wronged him, and the rich (I think). So he calls himself Sweeney Todd and sets up a barbers shop, where he kills men, sends them down a shaft, into the basement which ajoins Mrs. Lovett's pie shop... you can tell where this is going can't you?

Of course another reason for this, is that the Judge has Benjamin/Sweeney's daughter (again I think).

So he goes on this killing spree, and I'm figuring the ending is not a happy one, and as it's a musical there are lots of surreal scenes, like JD is singing to different people in the street and they take no notice of him etc. It's a musical. In musical's these things go.

Oh, yeah definietly. Sleepy Hollow is my favourite TB/JD film. I just love the over-the-top gothic settings and the almost 1930's Universal film-feel to it. And this looks like it could be a little bit like that. Creepy and weird.

I believe in America it comes out at Christmas, I have heard Christmas Day, I'm not sure. As for the rating... gah.. I would be truly surprised if it was higher than a PG-13 or a 15 here in the UK... I don't know if you have a higher rating than a PG-13 in America before you reach "R" (18 in the UK) but a 15 is what I think it will be for the UK, and that's just before you get to the 18 rating. Sleepy Hollow was a 15.

I don't know much about the stage show, but I'd like to think the rating will be based on the blood and violence and not swearing and adult themes. TB/JD films are usually pretty clean in those areas.

OMG, I am sooo exicted about this film. I love Tim Burton and Johnny Depp films so much, and I was so excited when I heard about this film, and the more I got to know about it the more I became excited! bouncey wouncey And last night I saw the official trailer, and it just made me feel all happy inside! It looks aboslutely fantastic. It looks like it is the ultimate Tim Burton/Johnny Depp film. It's more Burtonesque than I thought was possible. It's like Sleepy Hollow (my favourite Burton/Depp film) x100! I mean, Tim Burton + Johnny Depp + Musical + blood/gore + Sleepy Hollow-esque + Alan Rickman = When I saw the trailer last night, it actually took me a few moments to realize that in one section JD was actually singing! And then I just started laughing at that, because it was so strange and weird to hear him sing, and my brother came in and gave me one of those "oook" looks and I just couldn't stop laughing, it was hilarious. XD And the fact it's a musical! squee I love musicals, and this could possibly be up there with the more "normal" ones like My Fair Lady etc. And I love the look of the whole dream sequence things, like you get in "normal" musicals. Gah, it just looks so much fun! I'm going to be really stuck though when it comes to who to cheer for. Johnny Depp or Alan Rickman? I love them both, but AR usually plays the baddie to the goodie that I don't care for but in this case... gah.. what to do?! And the sets! The sets look fantastic! It looks a mixture between Jack the Ripper London, and Phantom of the Opera Paris. It's really weird though. Because JD has a cockney accent like he did for POTC, it's like Jack Sparrow.... but not... XD ... And I can tell already, that I will definitely be wanting the soundtrack. calms down We don't get it in the UK until January though (I think) which is a shame, I would have loved to have gone to see this on my birthday or something. But still, I have teh trailer! goes to watch it again and again and again Yes, as you can tell, I am very hyper about this film.

I haven't actually seen Sweeney Todd, but I've sung some songs from it in voice study...Nothing's Gonna Harm you (?, was that one?) which I didn't like very much, and something else I can't remember. I'm horrible! It sounds like it could be great fun to watch. Which parts do Johnny Depp and Alan Rickman play?

Well the story is new to me, so I don't know any of the songs. Johnny Depp playes Sweeney and Alan Rickman plays the Judge.. Judge... Turpin? I don't quite know his name.

i'm not quite as hyper-fwee about it as you, JF, but i'll definitely be going to see this. i also adore musicals; and with tim burton directing, it'll certainly be worth seeing. he has a great eye for film-making, and the dark nature of this should be right up his street. it certain looks very promising, judging by the trailer. i have to admit though, i was a little disappointed when i first realised that it was the proper serious musical, and not the brilliantly cheesy comic version that i was in a few years ago (called 'sweeney todd: the shock and roll show'). i really did love that show - very funny, and a great laugh to do. i realise it's not as filmable as the sondheim musical (many would say not as good, but they're completely different kettles of fish, so it wouldn't be fair to compare them), but it would have been cool to see it on screen.

We have a Sweeney Todd thread??? Why haven't i seen this thread sooner? Why didn't you send a special thread opening invitation directly to my inbox, why have I gone four hours with no knowledge of this important thread's existance??? Why why why??? Anyway, I have arrived and I'm gonna camp here and never leave until the movie comes out and people have told me about it and I've decided whether I can go see it or it'll make me soo sick because of the gore and blood... Anyway, this movie is the main topic for any Rickman, Burton, Depp- threads and Misc. Actors, Movies/TV etc forums... now what are we gonna talk about there, when we have a specific thread for the movie here? Most important question though: WHERE IS THE TRAILER???

@ ethelfleda - Haha, well doubt anyone was feeling as hyper-fwee about it, as I was when I started this thread. I think someone must have put something in my tea. Well isn't this film going to be pretty much based on the stage show Sweeney Todd? Because I noticed Danny Elfman isn't doing the music, as they are using the songs and the music from the show. @ Ea - Lol, well for a start you were on holiday, and secondly I only started it today. Oh, dear it seems I was careless about sending invitataions. Nothing annoys people more I believe. Gah, good ol' Oscar Wilde. Yay! We can have campfires and singing.. and toasted marshmellows and rum! Well I personally don't want to know too much about the story (although you get like a mega-quick history of SW from the trailer) but I do know that the ending will be less than.. er.. happy maybe? I dunno. I could be wrong there, but the best prize is a suprise after all. [if I start quoting from TB/JD movies just poke me] Coincidentally, Sleepy Hollow was on tonight, which made my day twice over. I'm thinking of having a TB/JD fest. Which probably means I'll have a hyper-hangover for a few days. Hmm.. well my brother downloaded the trailer, but I don't know where from, sorry. Just saw the trailer a couple of hours and the film looks great. I'm a huge fan of everything Tim Burton and Johnny Deep, so this movie is a must watch for me this year .

Because I noticed Danny Elfman isn't doing the music, as they are using the songs and the music from the show you're right, the film's based on the stage musical by stephen sondheim, which was very successful on broadway (what i meant by "the proper serious musical"). however, there is another stage musical based on the story of sweeney todd, which was written for children and is performed by amateur theatre companies and schools ("the brilliantly cheesy comic version"). it was this second version that i performed in and loved so much. hope that makes things a little clearer.

Ah, right. I didn't know there have been two versions, so to speak. I suppose you can understand why they chose to do the Broadway version though, if it is darker, that would be more suited to Tim Burton and Johnny Depp.

Squee! I just about died when I finally saw the trailer! I can not wait for this movie. Seriously. It's going to the be the ultimate musical with all those fab actors/actresses and the singing and the story and the setting... wow!

gee, I've heard (but only very little... like only that Johnny was going to be in a movie called Sweeney Todd ) about this movie but I had no clue what it was about... and I'm still slightly confused... what exactly is the plotline? (sorry, if it's already been mentioned and I just overlooked it) it sounds interesting and when I read you, JF, say it's a lot like Sleepy Hollow... well, right there you got my interest! Sleepy Hollow is probably one of my all-time favorite movies with Johnny Depp in it! (and I can't seem to find it in any store! I've been looking and looking and I really want to buy it... sigh) anyway, so Johnny sings? sounds interesting. lol (man, how in the world have I not seen the trailer or anything for this movie? when does it come out in America? Anyone know? and more importantly what's it rated?)

(I feel bad for Mr. Benjamin Barker after just reading what you said the movie was about) hmmm, however the whole killing spree thing (as understandable as it may be (although I'm not sure if you ever have to subject yourself to doing that no matter how angry or mad you are at someone ) may be a minor set back depending on how bad/gruesome it is and all that... but overall the story sounds like an good one. Sad endings aren't all bad.... and I don't mind if it's a musical or how that effects the movie... it really doesn't matter either way... hmmm, that may be sort of what I liked about Sleepy Hollow too... and Johnny still brought some classic JD funniness to it... the story was one that caught you up and got your interest (also it was fairly clean compared to lots of "Halloween" movies ) lol isn't "creepy and weird" what all of Tim Burton's movie are? thanks again! hmmm, I guess I don't really pay to much attention to how we rate things here (guess I should've asked what it was rated for)... I think we have G, PG, PG-13, and R... but I could be wrong... ah, most of the rating is screwed up here anyway, IMO. we rate thinks with an over abundance of adult themes with only a PG-13 and then something that just has some violence, language, and scary images we rate with R... a little mixed up but that's just my opinion... shrugs Anyway, I think Sleepy Hollow was/is PG-13. Well, it sounds like that's what it'll be rated for. and some blood and voilence I can handle... it just depends on the feel of it...
