What do you prefer? Widescreen or Fullscreen?
I find it so weird that American retailers offer Fullscreen edition DVDs. Here DVDs only come with the original format in which the film was shot in. A fullscreen version of a film is a cropped version. You're missing half of the screen for every single second throughout the movie. I guess it's all about preference but I honestly cannot fathom how you could choose a cropped version over the real version.
Here's a bit of screen comparison:
Fullscreen
Widescreen
Fullscreen
Widescreen
It's especially disturbing with the LotR shot there, as no matter how they crop it, you're still missing several of the characters on screen!
Anywho, this isn't meant to be all that serious and I hope Fullscreen-lovers out there don't take any offense - I just can't understand your preference that's all

I hate fullscreen. We buy most movies in widescreen, unless they are unavaliable in that format.

My family has a fullscreen tv, so we usually try to get fullscreen movies. Our tv isn't exactly huge, so it can be kinda hard to see what's going on if we're watching a widescreen movie. Once I'm out on my own, though, I'm sure I'll start getting widescreen movies. My laptop is widescreen, and I want to get a widescreen tv sometime.

Ah, does your TV not accomodate fullscreen films? Our does, and it's a pretty old television and certainly not as big as the widescreens. I can imagine it's a pain though if you can only watch fullscreen on something that should be wide.

^Our's does work with fullscreen movies- when we watch widescreen, though, the movie is in the middle of the screen with big black bars above and below it. It can get rather annoying. lol

I prefer widescreen, just because you know that what you're seeing is pretty much what the film-makers see.

Yes, we have the black bars as well, but when he had our widescreen TV, that also had black bars... so I always thought widescreen = black bars

I watch wide screen, but I never realized full screen cut out so much! We have a wide screen television as well, but we also still have the black bars, though they're not as big.

Hm, I'll have to try a widescreen movie on my laptop sometime and see if I still get the black bars.

We just got a widescreen TV recently, and I much prefer it over fullscreen. You can definatly see a difference. Alot of our movies are in fullscreen, but they actually look pretty good on our new TV. Part of the picture is still cut off, of course, but they still look good.

I've gotten so used to widescreen now (since our bigger TV and both our DVD-playing computers use it) that fullscreen kinda bothers me. Especially on the LOTR theatrical editions...oh well. I really only bought those for the special "stuff" anyway.

well, where I live it's actually been a while since I've seen a dvd come out with the option of fullscreen format. Many now are just widescreen. And I use to hate widescreens and the two bars use to drive me insane but I've gotten used to it (even on our fullscreen tv) and now I actually would probably have to say I like widescreen just as well as (if not better than) fullscreen.

I never really pay attention to whether it is wide or full. When I watch a movie, it is to soak in the storyline, not all of the little added details of it. Also, with the comparison. I see what you are saying, but movies are really meant to be stand-still. Everything the director intends you to see will be in the full screen version. Like, the LotR one, that was more than likely a scene where they zoomed in. Meaning that you would have seen all of the characters, and then it would have focused on the other characters in the end of it.

Hmm yeah I have to agree with you Eru... I can't stand fullscreen... you get a lot of stuff cut out from the sides. Nope, widescreen for me!

Widescreen for me! If you have the black bars, check to see if the remote for your TV has a button that says "Video" on it. You may be able to adjust your TV to adjust the size of the black bars. I didn't know this until recently, but some TV's allow you to control this so that the black bar is only a tiny black bar at the top and the bottom instead of most of the screen.
