my sister's doing an exam on women in film in january, and she's asked me to ask you guys for your opinions as part of her research. so, as well as the poll there are a couple of questions...

what do you think about the roles for women in film from the 1940s through to modern day, and how do you think those roles have changed?

how do you think the portrayal of women in film compares to the portrayal of men in film?

any opinions would be muchly appreciated. thankee.

Spooky! Me and my brother were only talking last night about modern actresses and the sort of roles they get.

Well modern film roles for women have drastically changed from the 1940's. (If we mean film roles set in the time when the film is made, period pieces don't really change between the ages).

Female characters are no longer centred around house wives in the middle of a family crisis or nightclub dames who have done wrong. The amount of characters women can now potray is incredible when you think about it. Action roles, roles where the female is actually working as someone who in previous years, men would only do that job.

As women were granted more independance, film roles have reflected that. Practically any male character could have a female counterpart.

I haven't watched an awful lot of modern films, and as I love my older films, I kinda like the quiet mother-at-home films with a nice warm fuzzy ending. I'm not saying modern female roles are generally bad, although sometimes I think actresses sell themselves for the cliche female role to get a few laughs that we've all seen before.

I think when it comes to female roles in modern comedies, we've taken 2 steps back. (Not just the roles but comedies in general). There seem to be an awful lot of samey female characters in comedies, and nothing really fresh.

Hmm... the second question is a hard one. I think both men and women can get some really cracking characters. It's always been that way, although in the 40's, 50's men could do more and probably got the better more diverse roles. But portrayal... I think there were certainly more "bad" women in the earlier years of films then "bad" men, now I think it's pretty even. More characters in films are not saints, and often men and women equally have faults, rather than one or the other. There is certainly more equality in films now, which is quite right!

I second everything JF said. Women are being written as more rounded characters, and an actress today has more choices today that she did 50 years ago. I think that probably has something to do with more women writing the scripts and screenplays who understands what a women feels and the unique choices she has to make. For example in action films where a woman plays the star or a major character, she's often conflicted with what her heart tells her is right and what her mind tells her is right. It's much easier to write those kinds of things when you're a woman than when you're man trying to figure out what the heck is going through a woman's mind. :P

I do feels that women are often objectified in comedies today, though. Honestly I don't watch many "dumb comedies" but the few I have seen always show the woman as the "straight man" to the comic and/or an object of lust to joke about. Strong feminist could argue that an old films objectifies a woman just as much, but to me it's much better to be portrayed as a loving wife and counselor to her husband than a dumb you-know-what to be taken advantage of.

You know, in some ways I think women might have even more diverse roles than men! But that could be because I'm a woman and can understand different women's motives a lot easier than men's. ;)

I liked the way women were portrayed back in old movies better.Todays films seem to put them down, with the exception of fantasy. :disgust:
