I was flipping through the shows on tv and I landed on something like will and grace or something and it dawned on me...I hate shows that tell me when to laugh.

Anyone else think so? What shows?

I actually like them.I grew up with 50s sit-coms so I'm very used to it. :-D

It totally depends on the show for me. If the jokes are too unfunny and the acting is embarrassingly bad, then it's just annoying with the laughter because you can tell it's either forced or the show's not done in front of a studio audience.

There are some really genuinely funny sitcoms though, like Friends or That '70s Show!

Haha, I love Will & Grace. :P

I don't see it as telling you when to laugh, but just encouraging a sense of companionship, so that when you laugh out loud at home you don't feel quite so embarrassed. But I can understand if you don't find the show funny at all it sounds quite stupid.

You mean shows with laughter tracks?

I don't see them as telling you when to laugh really, but then I watch a lot of older British shows, or should I say I have watched them, so I'm used to the laughter. I'm not sure what their purpose is actually, or if I do know, I have forgotten. :P

Okay, i'll admit that some are good. I like that 70s show for sure. But they only work if it's actually funny. Whatever I was watching the other night didn't make any sense, it was just random laughing in placed i didn't think were funny at all.

My favorite old TV show, The Addams Family, has a laugh track and I don't mind it too much because it was just part of the era it was made in. But I will admit it's easier to understand what they're saying if there's no laugh track, and sometimes it's just distracting. It also means you can't turn the volume up too loud, especially late at night. :P

Eh, I just think it's tacky when an actor says a line, and then pauses and waits for the laugh track.

From what I've seen that tends to happen in modern American comedies, not so much with the older British stuff.

We Brits have a wonderful sense of humour, I swear half the time we laugh at things the writers of the show never realised was funny. :teehee:

I dunno if anyone has heard of 'My parents are aliens,' it's a kids program in England and the first series was good, but then they put really annoying laughter and booing in the background and that ruined it.

I don't mind genuine laughter though, it's just the blatently fake stuff that annoys me.

I personally don't like laugh tracks because they ruin the suspension of disbelief. When I'm watching a show and a funny line is said and there is laughter on the show itself, it reminds you that this isn't real.
