This is one of my FAVORITE books of all time. My favorite adaptation is the 1998 one with Justine Waddell, but honestly the story in itself is just amazing. I think it's really powerful and shows the double standard there was for women at the time. And it's so sad that the actions of men turned poor Tess from an innocent woman to a condemned one. *sigh* |

yeah, I think Jane Austen does often point out the flaws of society, but she does that using comedy and satire. Her characters generally seem to be good at heart despite their imperfections. but in Tess, I think Hardy really shows just how cruel and hypocritical society can be. ***SPOILERS*** For example, I think it's terrible when, after everything, Alec comes back into Tess's life as a street preacher.... |
