I can see the benefit, but just looking at the displays in Curry's and Asda and the way the tech people set their TV's up, really also shows you how bad it can look when it's not done properly. Only the other week for the first time since we started looking at HD TV's with Blue-Ray DVD's playing on them, did we see one that was set up so as to not make it look super sharp, therefore grainy. And it did look good. So I can see the benefit of it, but at the moment, I think we're all happy with our non wide screen TV (must be 10 years old at least, lol).

My parents have a great big nice HD flat screen wide screen TV whatever and Blu-Ray and it's great. The picture is really great.

So, like JF, I can see the benefit of it all.

But me? I have no moneys. :P So my non-widescreen TV does me just fine. And I don't have Blu-Ray either. *GASP* And you know what? I think I'll live until I'm able to afford it all. Ha ha ha!

Although, it does make me a little sad when I come home from my parents after watching something on their TV and then I see mine. It's a little sad. But like I said, I'll live!

Exactly the reason I never bought one in the first place; tech shops never seemed to set them up right.

Which is crazy because... why would people buy them if they think they look bad? Especially somewhere like Curry's that makes their money from technology. I could imagine maybe Argos not setting one up right, but not Curry's. HMV also mess up their displays a lot.

I still think though it's going to take more than just removing all the features from DVD's and sticking them on Blueray to get people buying it. Even if someone was changing their TV, it doesn't mean they're going to swap to Blueray, and for the people who like their TV... they're not going to buy 2 pieces of equipment just to watch DVD's.

It will be interesting to see if this phases out, but I hope if something must die it's 3D. I really hate 3D. I watched on a 3D TV in Asda and the glasses I had to wear, gah, AND it looked crap.

THIS.
YES.
AGREED.
3D MUST DIE.

That's all I have to say. And I shall rant no more about 3D.

I'll admit it, I'm addicted to high-resolution images, and it pains me when I'm watching a *cough*bootleg*cough* version of a show/movie that's in really crap quality. So I'd probably adore high definition stuff. But...I'm poor. Not only do the systems required to play Bluray discs appear to be outlandishly expensive, but the discs themselves are pretty ridiculous...especially if I already own non-Bluray versions. Yeah, maybe this makes me a bad Ringer, but there's no way I'm buying the EEs on Bluray. I've got the box sets on regular DVDs and I can't afford to get duplicate editions just for the better picture. Sure, I'd have a squee-fest at the superb quality....but it's not worth the money for me personally.

I am too poor for Blueray, LOL. I feel sooo wretched now :goofy:

Seriously, I don't care THAT much for so much quality. I am very much used to DVD and I don't think I will change that soon.

As for 3D, LET IT BURN IN HELL.

We have a fairly new TV [it's only 2 years old I believe], and a Bluray player, but we hardly ever use it. My sister has the Toy Story 3 bluray, and it looks great, but everything else we have is DVDs because they can be played on the bluray player as well. *shrug* I just hope it doesn't eliminate the DVD as quickly as, say, the CD was eliminated by MP3.

What's disappointing about the emergence of Blu-Ray is that nowadays most special features go to them and not DVDs. The last DVD I bought that was two disc and had special features was I believe District 9. Neither Black Swan nor Inception had much in terms of special features and that's what I feel is the most troubling issue. I want my commentaries.

You sound like my brother. :P

It's disturbing that they seem to be now placing emphasis on the features provided for bluerays while clearly making it known that buying DVD's now means that you won't get anything other than dodgy extras and the film. It's almost like forcing people to buy them because instead of a choice, if you like your features, you have no choice.

Now that you mention it, I'm sure that's exactly what they want you to think and do. It's worked on me, partly at least. I've started buying the HP Ultimate Editions, and the first two I bought were DVDs. They have all the features that the Blurays have, except for a commentary by the director that plays and shows you short featurettes while you're watching the film. Needless to say, I shall be spending my hard earned money on the Blurays for the remaining 6 films. It's ridiculous.

Although, I will say, I think LotR missed its chance. My dad bought the extended versions when they came out every year, and a few years after RotK I purchased the special edition trilogy set. I actually have no desire to purchase the Bluray editions now that they're available, because the EEs and the special editions are filled to the brim with extras, featurettes, and commentary. That's a DVD done right in my opinion.

Bluray at the moment is just too expensive for me, also I'm not sure if I personally who notice the difference between a dvd and Bluray.... I don't really notice a difference between my tv and my parents HD one....soooo....

That being said when I eventually get a PS3 (hey I can dream!) I probably will get the LOTR blurays both regular and extended just because I'm a crazy collector, but I can't think of any other dvd's I would replace with Bluray.

In all honesty though the only way to phase out DVDs quicker is to reduce the price of Bluray discs so they are the same price or cheaper than a DVD. *shrug*

I wouldn't even buy DVD now, I am relying on my old one from times when I had more money :p But still, I am very happy from my DVD and don't crave for better colors/contrast so...

Well given how pirated movies are fast becoming a problem, it does make sense to stuff Blurays with the special features. However I think that movie studios are making it clear that by putting them on Blurays, we can expect DVDs to become obsolete at some point. What really gets on my nerves is I wish they had some sort of offer where you could exchange your DVDs to get the Blurays. But since you can't make money from that...bleh. I wonder if anyone has actually gone through the short featurettes in the movies. Are they really worth buying a HDTV, a Blu-Ray player, and the Blu-Ray discs?

Oh and 3D needs to go to hell. Badly. I don't care if I have to flagellate myself every day for the next 40 days to convince god to smite it. I'll do it! They have 3D laptops where you can watch Bluray 3D movies and it looks awful. Really awful.

^ OMG, 3D laptops? *gets a ray gun*

Of course, if the public are not buying into bluerays... they'll just have to make DVD's better. My brother read in his Empire magazine that bluerays are not doing as well as expected so maybe.... there is hope. DVD's were a natural progression from videos - small, compact, better visuals, better sound, easier to find your place, chapter menus, features and more.... bluerays.... not much difference really. Now if bluerays meant you could watch by having something imbedded direct in your brain so you didn't need a disc... now that's progression.

Hey, it could happen. I watching either the Canadian Dragon's Den or the US version Shark Tank (can't remember which one it was - millionaires willing to invest in people's businesses etc) and someone wanted to plant something in people's ears, which needed surgery, so they wouldn't need to walk around with a bluetooth and risk it falling out and breaking. AND they needed to recharge the chip by sticking a wire in their ears at night AND more surgery would be required when they wanted an upgrade.

This guy was asking for $200,000 dollars for this... the revenue for DVD's would surely be more.
