The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is a fantastical morality tale, set in the present day. It tells the story of Dr Parnassus and his extraordinary 'Imaginarium', a traveling show where members of the audience get an irresistible opportunity to choose between light and joy or darkness and gloom. Blessed with the extraordinary gift of guiding the imaginations of others, Dr Parnassus is cursed with a dark secret. Long ago he made a bet with the devil, Mr Nick, in which he won immortality. Many centuries later, on meeting his one true love, Dr Parnassus made another deal with the devil, trading his immortality for youth, on condition that when his first-born reached its 16th birthday he or she would become the property of Mr Nick. Valentina is now rapidly approaching this 'coming of age' milestone and Dr Parnassus is desperate to protect her from her impending fate. Mr Nick arrives to collect but, always keen to make a bet, renegotiates the wager. Now the winner of Valentina will be determined by whoever seduces the first five souls. Enlisting a series of wild, comical and compelling characters in his journey, Dr Parnassus promises his daughter's hand in marriage to the man that helps him win. In this captivating, explosive and wonderfully imaginative race against time, Dr Parnassus must fight to save his daughter in a never-ending landscape of surreal obstacles - and undo the mistakes of his past once and for all...

Starring Christopher Plummer as Dr. Parnassus, And Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law as the transformations of Tony, with Tom Waits as Mr. Nick, Lily Cole plays Valentia [I'm assuming this is Paranssus' daughter].

I think this looks quite interesting, with a very whimsical, magical realism feel to it. It's not quite dark enough to be a Tim Burton film, but it does have elements that his movies have. And it has a list of amazing actors, as Heath's last performance of his too short life, it's sure to be an amazing experience. And with the acting prowess of people like Plummer and Depp, it will be amazing. Jude Law and Colin Farrell are also amazing actors [and Farrell is very attractive...], and hopefully Lily Cole is able to hold up to these acting giants that she's been put beside on screen.

Here's a link to the trailer, the CGI is of a lower quality that us LotR fans are used to, but it might be a part of the charm...

What about everyone else? Interested? Maybe rent it? Too weird?

Awesome! I was stalking this over on IMDB since JD's in it but I didn't know they had a trailer up!! *runs to Youtube*

Ahh, looks like there's going to be quite a few fine men in this movie... :eyeroll: I shall try not to drool when I'm in the theatre <33 Overall it looks interesting and different [two things I love in a movie] but Heath and Johnny will just seal the deal for me, I'm sure. ;-)

I will post more when I'm actually coherent :swoon:

I am so excited about this movie. It looks like it'll be fascinating and breath-takingly gorgeous. Plus, it has the added lure of Heath Ledger, whom I would have gone to see anyway, but when you add in the talent of Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell it becomes irresistible.

I hope it makes it to theaters here at all! IMDB puts the US release date as Christmas, but it also says "limited." :(

I saw it tonight!!! It was SO weird, but I absolutely loved it. The only part I didn't like was Colin Farrell's bit but anything else was LOVE!

It's hard to really, fully describe the movie as it's so incredibly out there (and I mean, come on... it's Terry Gilliam!) and I think I'd need to see it again to really take it all in.

I loved the fact that the CGI wasn't top notch, it added to the storybook feeling to the movie and felt a lot like Gilliam's older movies.

It was wonderful seeing Heath once again in a brand new film (and more as himself this time than the Joker). It really, truly hit me tonight that this will forever be his last film.

***SPOILER***SPOILER***SPOILER***
In case you are wondering how the scenes work when Johnny, Jude and Colin are playing Heath's part - they work fine. They're all made to look like Heath (hair, facial hair and clothes). I just didn't like Colin's bit because first of all, I don't like him as an actor, second of all, he looked/talked/acted the least like Heath and his fantasy world sequence was kind of boring - it didn't do anything for me.

I want to see it, I want to see it, I want to see it. NOW!

So the release date is December 25 for me, and I'll be in Australia then. Well, the release date for Australia is October 29... I will never get to see the movie... unless I go to Bulgaria... where the movie opened yesterday!! Or the UK...

Maybe the film will still be running in Australia by the time you get there? I mean Harry Potter is still running in cinemas across the world and while Dr Parnassus isn't in the same kind of blockbuster category as Harry Potter, it's been incredibly well received everywhere and given really high ratings and it IS a film of epic scope - and those usually last a while in the cinema.

How long are you in Australia for? If you're only there on a short vacation the film could also very well still be playing in the Danish theaters by the time you get back.

That's true, a very valid point! But don't you think it's quite a long time to wait? Until January!!
I can't stay hyped up about this for another three months.. no matter how much I love being hyped up... In fact, I think we need more exciting movies at the moment. Thanks for the encouraging though! :-)

^ Now you know how this poor Brit feels. One of the most powerful countries in the world and I have to wait 3 months after most places to see any Pixar films. Sweeney Todd was January for me while everyone else saw it in October.

I'm sure with it being Heath's last film, and with you being in Australia, there will be somwhere that will show it. It's a long time to wait, but at least you will get to see it somwhere.

Actually, Sweeney Todd premiered in late December in the US. Late January in Sweden.

And Egypt had to wait until May to see it. :teehee:

I don't think it has anything to do with how powerful or big a country it is, distributions vary from nation to nation.

Why, why, why has only Eru posted in this thread after having seen the movie??? I refuse to believe that only one A-U'er has seen such an epic movie with so many divine actors. :P

Did you get to see it yet, Gimli?

They didn't show it in Australia but it finally premiered here and I hope to go see it soon. :-)

I'm not sure what to make of this movie, but I do want to see it. Maybe this is a silly question, but what age group is the 'intended' audience? It has the feel of a children's story but it's hard to tell.

I finally saw it! It wasn't quite what I expected. It was a little slow to develop and a little absurdist towards the end, but once you stopped trying to figure out exactly why everything was happening how it was it became very charming. :D I just wish there had been more scenes in the Imaginarium. Straight forward ones, like the first time. That was really spectacular!

@ Beri... No, I wouldn't say it was for children. It's rated PG-13, and has occasional cursing and violent images. Mostly, I'm not sure if a young kid could keep up with the story-- why people are changing, etc.

Still waiting for it! It won't has its premiere in the Netherlands until March or April, so I'll have to wait a little longer :( Really looking forward to it, though ;)
