I'm still amazed Up got nominated for Best Picture but considering the reaction last year with Wall-E, not quite that surprising. I'm also shocked that District 9 managed to get up there as well. I really really REALLY hope District 9 gets the Visual Effects. Star Trek? I love you. And Avatar, I would if I saw you but District 9 managed to do it without a truckload of money. I'm seriously shocked that 9 didn't make it to Best Art Direction and District 9 for Best Cinematography. I felt disappointed that Capitalism: A Love Story didn't make it to Best Documentary Feature. Personal favourites aside from District 9...Christopher Waltz for Best Supporting Actor. That guy made you love a freakin' NAZI! While Ralph Fiennes just made you look at him and think "Oh...*beep*" This might go along with my hype aversion/dislike for Avatar, but I really didn't feel it deserved that many awards. And I feel sorry for Coraline. It was a great and wonderful film but it has no chance against Pixar and Up. I still need to see that though. |

Well to be fair, Return of the King did the exact same thing and WON every category it was in and I kinda doubt any of us would begrudge it. ![]() Then again, I need to see Avatar so I can judge for myself. |

![]() ![]() ![]() I liked the message and the visuals of Avatar the best. I still need to see UP and I heard Coraline wasn't that great from a few people but I still want to see it so I can judge myself. I have a feeling that Sandra Bullock will win for her performance in The Blind Side. I haven't seen the movie but all I ever hear about it is how amazing she was. ![]() ![]() |

Aw, you beat me too it Frosty. *sniffs* Well... there was some noise created the year The Dark Knight and Wall-e were not nominated for best picture, so it looks like the Academy may have taken note and gone back to the very early days of it's history, and allowed more so there is more choice. However... with the exception of UP which has now made history by being the first ever computer animated film to be awarded a Best Picture nomination... it is pretty much the same old, same old. It's either familiar kinds of films as usual (but more of them) and familiar faces. I was sort of hoping they might have chucked Sherlock Holmes in there, or something of that kind of film. Something popular without being meaningful or weighty in story. Maybe next year. And the SUPREME difference between ROTK and Avatar is that at least in 30 years time people can look back on ROTK and see that it was worthy of all its awards and that together all the different categories created and completed the film. In 3 years time, when everyone is watching Avatar on non-IMAX non-3D screens that are maybe 42" wide (mine is smaller that that) they're going to wonder why it won so much (as it will do no doubt) because watching it under those conditions will not show in the same glorious light. It wouldn't surprise me if Cameron is already creating a 3-D, IMAX TV that he can give away free with Avatar when it comes out on DVD. Because I can't see something so gimmicky having longevity. And no matter how much I dislike any film if it wins awards, I'd like it to still actually serve a purpose 10 years after winning and for people to still be able to enjoy it as much today as they did then. And if all that can be said for Avatar mainly is the effects - how will that translate? [and let's be honest folks, how many people REALLY have you heard say the film itself is good and not just the effects?] So yeah... that is deep down.. my main bug bear with Avatar - irrespective of me having watched it or not - it should be awarded Best Picture Viewed in IMAX and leave the Best Picture categories to films you can watch on any size screen with no 3-D glasses. Ok, rant over. ![]() |

Aww, I'm sorry JF. I'll let you do it next year? We can alternate until we're both old and tired. ![]() I thought of the BEST way to settle the Visual Effect Award. Each team creates an army of their respective aliens and then have them fight each other! ![]() |

LOL! Well I have a feeling I'll always be older and more tired than you. ![]() XD That is a very good way to settle it. I'm also really, really disappointed that the Pixar short Partly Cloudy, which was on before UP was not nominated. That's quite possibly my favourite of all the Pixar shorts. Although I am glad Wallace and Gromit is nominated, so hopefully Aardman will continue there unbroken run of winning everytime they are up for the award. |

Film-making wise, I think Avatar is getting a lot of nods, mainly due to the fact that this is James Cameron's FIRST film since the Titanic and that he's sat on this production and this film idea until he felt the technology of filmmaking was able to convey the his vision. I mean, since Titanic guys. You know, back when Leonardo was young. |

Well he has made a Titanic documentary since then, but apart from that.... It's amazing how he and his ex-wife (who has been in exile for seven years) are both up for loads of awards. |

Currently watching the red carpet right now and this is perhaps my favorite part because we see the interviews with the stars and it's good to connect with them! |

I am watching the Red Carpet Ceremony as well right now. ![]() ![]() ![]() I have the actual award show set to record in case by some strange twist of fate I have to leave the house. Awww... George Clooney is such a sweetheart. Spending time with the people like us who have to stand behind a gate. I admire that a lot, especially someone of his stature in society. Good on him. |
