Just wondering if I am the only one watching this awesome ITV drama series? The last episode aired tonight (although I haven't seen it yet so no spoilers :P) and it really is the one thing that makes my week. It's about a rich family in England and their estate, the battle to keep the estate in the family, their own lives and the lives of their servants downstairs and how sometimes their stories mix together unexpectedly. Set originally on the day the Titanic sank in 1912, it concludes as WWI starts (1914).

Not sure if it's been shown in the US yet or if it will be, but if you like period dramas, shows that have lots of different and interesting characters from different backgrounds, Maggie Smith with some one liners that are classics already, and beautiful big houses and period dresses, you will LOVE this. (And also really squeeish romances )

I have heard about this, but I haven't seen any episodes. I love costume dramas though, so I feel like if I start watching I won't stop. I really don't need another show. :teehee:

I’ve been watching Downton! =D I’m glad that there’ll be a second series (although we have to wait till next year, and I don't want to wait so long!), because not enough happened for it to be only one series. I want to know what happens to all the characters now, especially as the first world war is starting. That’ll provide a pretty eventful backdrop. Anyhoo, I’m glad there’s a thread to talk about this program! ^_^ It’s great, and it’s always nice to watch period drama TV on a Sunday. :-D

Okay, so I've seen the first three episodes and had to stop by. :D

First thoughts:
I like Matthew. He's sweet.
They are snobs. Good grief.
I really can't stand O'Brien or Thomas. Jerks to the max.
Maggie Smith is always brilliant.
Bates is adorable. It probably helps that I love him in North & South too.
Hugh Bonneville is fabulous. I love his character.

I saw the first episode when it premiered the other night and absolutely loved it. First of all, the whole thing is just wonderful to watch with the gorgeous rooms and costumes. Second of all, I'm really interested in the servant-master dynamic. I've always wondered how the servants to a posh family like that feel about their jobs. You always see them in these period dramas but you never get to know what they feel or aspire to. I also like how all of the characters--even the insignificant ones--are quite complex.

I can't wait 'till next week. :D

Funny you should mention this. Just the other day my mom mentioned hearing about it and then last night it was showing here in the US on PBS... but I'm not really sure what episode it was on or what was happening as I walked in and it was halfway over. :erm:

but it's good? From my experience you Brits have excellent period dramas. :P

It's really terrific, PD. :D It comes on at 11:00 pm Sunday night where I am and I think it most places, but of course that changes depending on your PBS station. Last night was the premiere of the second episode, so your not so far behind if you manage to jump in next week. I would recommend trying to see the first two in re-runs, first, though, because the characters are quite complex and there's a lot of different story lines. I'm pretty sure they've been playing some re-runs; you could try to look them up in your local listings. (They'd be under "Masterpiece Classics," by the way.) :)

PBS usually has the episodes up online on their site as well for a month or two after. I definitely recommend watching it. It's pretty brilliant.

*squiggle hugs*

I'm so glads you guys like it. It made my Sunday nights for many weeks, and I'm just sorry we couldn't all watch it together and discuss it!

Just so you know, series 2 has been commissioned and will be filming shortly, to be aired this autumn and also there will be a Christmas special, so hopefully you guys will get to see those episodes too. :-)

I'm really surprised how quickly it was shown in the US after the UK, as it was a surprise massive hit over here and has been repeated already twice.

If you like this then you will also like "Upstairs Downstairs" which was 3 part BBC series on just before Christmas, so look out for it. ;)

Okay, so the series ended weeks and weeks ago but I finally have some time to write down some thoughts. :)

So, if the first episodes were good, the last few were absolutely brilliant! I loved the huge plot twists, with Cora suddenly getting pregnant and completely changing everything, and then losing the baby. Very sad, but I couldn't help but be relieved for Matthew's sake!

Sybil is kind of terrific. Maybe it's because I'm also the youngest of three, but I think she's my favorite character. Women for the Vote! :D
I like Branson, too. I hope he goes on to become a MP or something.

Then there's Thomas. Oh, Thomas... I don't think I actually hate him (because he's just a character and not an actual person, I can leave the hating to Anna and Bates while I cheer them on :P), but I find it sort of fascinating to see just how low he can sink. And now, he's going to be off saving lives as a medical assistant in WWI! Ironic. Plus, O'Brien seems to have grown a conscious! What's up with that? (I love these massive character developments!)

All the sisterly back-stabbing is just terrible. The worst of it is I can totally see where each sister (Mary and Edith) is coming from, so I find it impossible to really take sides.

Maggie Smith is, of course, hilarious.

I wonder what's going to happen in the second series? I look it up on IMDB, and it seems like a lot of the characters aren't going to come back! For instance the actors who play Thomas and Gwen are only set down for 7 episodes, and then characters like Anna and Bates and many more are only set down for 10. I mean, I know Thomas and Gwen aren't going to be part of the Downton Abbey staff anymore but we've gone so far with them it seems a shame not to follow up with how they're doing. :( And it makes me sad that we may be without so many others characters for part of the second season. In fact, the only characters who are apparently going to appear in every episode are Lord Grantham, Cora, Violet, Mary, Edith, and Matthew.

They started showing the series right went I went away on vacation but episode four is on tonight. I've been reading the general plot but will I even be able to catch up now halfway through the series? It looks like there's about a million characters. :P
And do you guys know a site where I can watch episode 1-3? Preferably a non-US site since I always have troubles with the US-ones when trying to access them from over here.

I think I might actually burst while waiting for Season 2. This show is my life, I swear. :swoon:

Can we just discuss the trailer? I cried. I actually had tears in my eyes because I am miserable and emotional about fictional characters ok. They better not kill anyone. :'-(

Great minds. I was just about to revive this thread. :D

I have actually seen at least 3 different adverts for this and I am so looking forward to it.

I have some magazine articles that give hints of what we can expect this series and also what the actors think about their characters, if anyone wants me to post them. I have been enjoying the images I've seen of Anna and Bates together and the actors feelings about their relationship. :D

I kept thinking someone was going to revive it, but I figured it was getting rather late, so I'd better just do it myself. :P

I've only seen one -- I think it's the longest out of them, but since I haven't seen the others, I don't know. They're not popping up on American TVs, obviously, since we're not supposed to get it until January (as if I'd really wait that long :teehee:)

Ooh, definitely do post them, if you get a chance. :) I'll probably wait to read them until after I watch the first episode, though, because I'm feeling very guilty about reading spoilers, but again, magazine articles definitely aren't going to make their way over here to America.

Good idea. :P

The most recent advert I have seen was with Carter in bed and Mary is sat talking to him, and he's giving her advice on what to do about Matthew! But then again she and Carter are quite close......

I'll try and type up any interesting tidbits I find. I've been trying to find some of the images online that are in the magazines, and instead I found a truckload which I haven't seen before.
