starring Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, and Geoffrey Rush. Per request of Ea, a thread for it so that we can discuss the ever-lovely Colin Firth.

Colin Firth is probably unfortunate in that the first film I ever saw him in was one of the worst films I have ever seen - The Importance of Being Earnest and then I saw his Mr. Darcy after I saw Matthew Macfadyn's and while the world drools over the former, I preferred the latters portrayal.

Other than that, I have seen him in nothing else and I can't say diddly about his acting talent. But his voice in real life, really does not match his looks.

I suppose also he doesn't seem to appear in the kind of films I like.

However, this looks like it could be a really good film. Although no doubt, hugely historically accurate. :P And of course it has Barbossa himself who signed my top trumps card, so that's always a bonus. ;)

Oh, I be sad... I just checked IMDB for a release date and Denmark was not on the list. Maybe we won't have the pleasure of getting the movies in the theatres... :(

I absolutely love Colin Firth.. he was fun in Bridget Jones and handsome as Mr. Darcy and absolutely lovely in Love Actually but when I saw him in A Single Man his quality as an actor really showed.

Well, interesting that Timothy Spall is going to play Winston Chruchill!! :P

This film looks amazing! I always love historical drama's and the cast is awesome.

I like Colin Firth's acting, although he, generally, plays the same type of characters. Geoffrey Rush on the other hand, is magnificant! I applaud for his variety of roles in his career.

I can't wait for this to come in the cinema. :)

Geoffrey Rush is awesome. Even as a pelican he is awesome.

@Will - It seems to me like this would be a different role for Colin Firth. I mean, I usually picture him as some romantic lead, not the King with a stammer. :teehee:

But Geoffrey Rush is going to be so awesome. And it even looks like Helena Bonham Carter is going to have a normal role in a movie!

I love costume drama/period pieces in general, so I'd be excited if it was just people sitting drinking tea or something. I'm not *too* hard to please. ;)

^Hear, hear to the tea-drinking, it's a very intriguing pastime in the English aristocracy. And if they threw in some balls too, I'd be all set for a two-hour movie! :P

I don't know the story of that king they're portraying. Do you guys who are familiar with history think it's going to be historically correct?

Balls? Oh, you mean dances! I thought you meant tennis balls... or something.

Yep, I know a bit about this King. (The current Queen's father). Shy, gentle man, never expected to become King, as his older brother was to be King. But his brother abdicated to marry an American divorcee (SHOCK HORROR! *GASP*) and so Albert then became George VI.

And that is the very brief non too spoilery history of this King. I doubt they will mess ^ that up. It's what they choose to have their characters say and whether any dates suddenly change to suit their purposes.

Did he change his name to George when he became king? When his name was actually Albert?

Author:  Johnny's Fan [ January 4th, 2011, 2:41 pm ]
Post subject:

Yes, he did. Generally there is a number of names to be used for a King - hence the reason the first born sons are named Henry, Charles, Richard etc etc and the second names that have never been used for a King - Harry, Albert, John etc.

If our Prince Charles abdicates to his son William, and he passes it onto his brother Harry, when Harry is King he'll change his name as well I would presume. Unless they are more "modern" and he stays Harry or Harold as he might be called.

^ "Charles? What are you doing with that pillow?" Can't see him abdicating to be honest ;)

But I'm sorry, ol' Firthy doesn't even come close to the absolute brilliance that is my darling Geoffrey Rush. I don't care how old he is, I will happily gush over that man :) And Timothy Spall as Churchill? Really? Hmmmmm.

Went and saw it today after class and was thoroughly impressed. I, like JF, have seen very few films with Colin Firth in them [most notable being the P&P miniseries], but I truly admired his performance. In fact the entire cast of actors were fantastic - Geoffrey Rush, Helena Bonham Carter, Timothy Spall, etc. The history was also surprisingly intact [mostly]!

I won't be surprised if this goes on to win several awards for acting and such. It truly was lovely! I was surprised however at the extent of the debilitating nature of Albert's speech impediment, and the nature of his relationship with his brother. David tortured him over it quite a bit - you couldn't help feeling awfully sorry for Albert!

Anyway, go see it as soon as you can. It's a must!

People are saying this is the best movie of the year.. already!! And Colin Firth and Helena Bonham-Carter (and Geoffrey Rush too, right?) won BAFTA awards for their performances in this movie.

Excited.. the movie is opening here on March 3rd.. a coiple of days after the Oscar show...

I found this interview on YouTube... seriously, who's that guy, Stephen Holt? I love the contrast between his flamboyant, colourful style and Colin Firth's total cool factor and wish to have a serious talk on the film. Priceless! :P

I just came back from seeing this, and it is fantastic! I really, really enjoyed it. Geoffry Rush is sheer brilliance (as some of you may have guessed.) ;) It was also nice to see Helena Bonham Carter as a not-crazy person. Colin Firth was good as well, but Geoffry Rush was definitely the star of it for me. Their relationship was played well, and the dynamic in the royal family was portrayed well as well, I think. :D

I absolutely adore this movie. I always thought of Collin Firth as a comedic actor, but he did a sublime job in this movie. I just loved it and it's now my favorite movie, after LOTR's of course. It's funny, sad, dramatic, and everything you could want in a film. :notworthy: :notworthy:

I watched this movie on a plane on the smallest screen ever so the sound quality was bad and the lighting awful. But still it is one of the best movies I've seen this year (well, I haven't seen a lot more actually...). I loved it for all the reasons you all have stated - and more for the fact that I was already determined to love it! :)
I wish I could watch it again in a movie theatre. By the way, am I the only one who didn't pay attention to any of the words he spoke in his great speech because I was busy clutching something nervously praying that he would get through it, even though I very well knew that he would because .. well, that's what the movie was all about! :P
