Pirates 4 is official now. It is coming out in the summer of 2011 and it's title is "On Stranger Tides!" Woo hoo!!!

Johnny dropped in on the Disney's D23 convention in pirate garb where they announced the title and release time.

Quote:
In his typical eccentric fashion, he quipped “I'm looking for a talking Frog. I like frogs" before making his exit as 5,000 fans looked on in disbelief.

Ha ha ha... Check it out:

I'm hyped.

 So typical Johnny! Hahahah.

AHHH I am SO stoked. I have a feeling it's going to be just as awesome as the Trilogy. As long as Johnny, T&T, Gore and Bruckheimer are involved , these movies couldn't possibly be bad.

What an awesome year 2011 will be. First Pirates and then Hobbit!

:trampoline:

Ha ha ha. :D YEAH! I wish I could have been there. I love what he said. I'm a huge frog lover. lol.

I don't think Gore Verbinski is involved in this one though. Bruckheimer is, but not Gore Verbinski. The guy directing it is... er... I forgot his name but he directed Memoirs of a Geisha which, though I haven't seen it, definently has nice cinematography and I think it will have the same sort of feel as the other three, so I'm still excited despite that change.

(I AM still scared about The Hobbit though...)

I'm afraid I can't agree with you. I already thought that the second and third movie greatly lacked the plot, creativity and the athmosphere which made Curse of the Black Pearl a great movie. I also thought that the acting of both Bloom and Knightley was not as good as in the first movie.

I just can't understand why succesful movies always should have sequels. It often turns out to be a disappointment or an exploition of the story.

I'm not saying that Johnny Depp's performance isn't brilliant. On the contrary, he's amazing just like the ever fabulous Geoffrey Rush.. but I had hoped that these great actors would also have kept the quality of the complete film in mind.

Well there is some good news for you... Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly are out of the picture for this one.

I actually think I prefer the sequels all in all. I just think they are a blast. The second is probably my all time favorite.

Hath my eyes deceived me?

This is some of the best news I've heard in forever! Well, not really, but being the huge <i>Pirates</i> fan that I am, it's absolutely wonderful. Although I've had past doubts, I'm still going to see it... I wasn't too thrilled at the idea of DMC either, but now it's my favorite of the previous three films. ;-)

*goes to her happy place*

Yes, I read that. A few days after the announcement the man who got him to do the original movie left Disney. All the news (more like "gossip") sites I saw it at were making it sound like the man (I believe his name was "Cook") had been fired, but then I read somewhere else that he had resigned so I don't really know what the deal is with that. From the direct quotes from Depp, it didn't sound like he was quitting the project and I don't think he would do that, it just sounded like he was dissappointed that he wouldn't get to work with him again on this film.

Nienna, I read that "On Stranger Tides" is actually a book which actually is pirate related and involves the fountain of youth (I don't remember where I read it now), so some people are speculating that the title is drawing from that which means we may be picking up where the third one left off. Sounds pretty cool to me. :)

^ What I was reading said he (Dick Cook, the studio head) was forced to resign for unknown reasons. I also read that Johnny had said his "passion for the project has been severely dampened," and as he hasn't officially signed a contract yet, he could bow out if the script isn't good enough, from what I understand.

The good news is Geoffry Rush is set to come back, and he hinted that it would involve Jack and Barbossa sailing to find the Fountain of Youth. (Which no one saw coming... at all. :teehee:)

I'm pretty excited about this, although I hope they try to make a really good movie, not just a sequel that coasts on the earlier one's popularity. I also hope they keep it from being just a farce. With Will and Elizabeth gone, there is no deep, romantic love story and angst-y family issues to keep the story grounded. Just watching Jack and Barbossa sailing around the Caribbean and arguing is not the basis for a really interesting and compelling movie.

Wait, what? Seriously? How can they drop two of the main characters and expect to keep the series going? Here I was desperately hoping that Pirates 4 was just a crazy rumour...unfortunately I can't share the enthusiasm, and I have low hopes for this movie. The plot can't go anywhere. =/

Methinks I'll dig out my copy of Curse of the Black Pearl to remind myself why I first fell in love with the series. The other movies were funny and all, and I did like the Calypso/Davy Jones story, but they just didn't live up to the origanal.

-ETA-

On a positive note, I did love Johnny's comment about the frogs. XD

Will and Elizabeth were great in the first film. In the second and third film they just bored me. Not as characters but as a couple. I don't care much for romance so having that out of the picture is not a problem for me.

And it sounds like to me that Johnny's disappointment about the project isn't about the project itself but because of the situation that has happened. He's always said he could do Pirates 10 if he was offered.

I also heard it was about the script or the material or something. Anyway, I'm concerned that JD is so bothered just because one dude left the company, no matter who he was, it seems like there might be more to it than that.

And at the moment, it is too early for me to be excited about this film. Although I like all the POTC films, I can honestly say hand on heart, I would have been happy with just the first one. Can I say that for other trilogies? Yes and no. But most know when to stop. No matter if JD and GR are in this fourth film, which will be worth watching for just those, it would be sad if that's all that will be good about it. Two excelllent characters played by two excellent actors in a really bad, re-hashed film which relies on that fact Jack and Barbossa are well loved, and that alone will make the film worthy in the eyes of the public.

I'll give it the benfit of the doubt, but at the moment I'm leaning towards being cautious with my expectations.

Glad to see I'm not the only one ;)

Also, Keira and Orlando actually didn't want to come back, they weren't dropped atall. (Am I the only one looking forward to a movie without the welp? Not meaning OB, just Will.)
