Yay, major Depp/Burton fan over here! And I think the trailer looks both amazing: very weird, very distinctive grey tints (as most of Burton's films) and I love the idea of a vampire from a long time ago walking around in a modern world. But I'm going to see it next week, so expect a fully informed opinion by then!
Looking forward to your review then! I think I'm left with sorta the same impression.. the production looks amazing as always but I'm not so sure about the idea of an old vampire in the psychedelic 70s actually... I mean is it supposed to be Gothic, funny, scary or just strange... probably a bit of everything.
It's based off of a soap opera from the 70s, actually, so...there's that. XD Burton didn't come up with the idea, he's just adapting it. I think it looks hilarious, and so Tim Burton it hurts! I hope it'll be like Beetlejuice and just full of semi-spooky fun. Plus I'm interested to see how Eva Green does as the witch...the only things I've seen her in are Womb (with Matt Smith), and that James Bond movie.
Yeah, I heard it's based off a soap so you're probably right it's gonna be more along the lines of Beetlejuice.. which I loved.. For me it's a matter of putting myself in the right mood if I go see it.. you know so I don't expect it to be something completely different and then become utterly disappointed afterwards, but semi-spooky fun sounds just about right!
I'm usually not too fussed at Burton films, but this one looks really really great. I love love love Eva Green (Ari-she's a very good witch, she played Morgana in Camelot, or whatever that American show that was like Merlin, but with sex was called) I like how it looks quite gothic camp and, the trailers all seem really really funny!
I just saw it and I was the only one in my family who liked it. It was very Beetlejuice, very Gothic and more sexual and less funny than the trailer leads you to believe, but I did like it. Helena Bonham Carter was awesome!

I went to see it!
I thought that it was a fun romp through Gothic conventions, or at least that was the pretense. Coulda just been That Depp and Burton got bored one day, haha.
It never tool itself too seriously, but at the same time, it wasn't outright silly. There were some plain bad decisions as far as the film as a film went - the exposition was too long, certain plot elements weren't introduced early enough, and the sexualisation of the girl played by Hit Girl from Kickass was frankly weird and made me a bit uncomfortable.
Overall a solid movie, but one I probably would have waited to watch on Bluray.

I saw it yesterday
Although the plot was a bit fast at points that could have had a bit more explanation and some parts took more time than they needed, I liked the movie overall. It was funny, with brilliant lines and a wonderful (as always) Johnny Depp. His bewilderment and sometimes anxiety in encountering 1972 were great and the music was very good. The end left me a bit confused though, but that's nothing new with Tim Burton films.
Overall, I'd definitely recommend it to Johnny Depp/Tim Burton/ancient-character-in-new-time fans

I thought it was a good film. Quite entertaining. Being old enough to remember, and was a fan of for a time of the old afternoon soap, they ticked all the right boxes in that category. The good thing was this movie didn't take itself too seriously, just serious enough.
I thought it was cool that Jonathan Frid, the TV show Barnabas, had a walk on cameo at the party. Too bad he died before the movie came out. He was 87. It will be worthy of a DVD in my library.
