Super hero movie of the decade, in my opinion. Marvel did something that no one else had done. Made a live action super hero team up movie and made it good! I mean, what with the hype they surrounded it with, I couldn't imagine the fan backlash they would have recieved had it been bad.
But I digress, I can't wait for the follow-ups.

They really did an awesome job of making sure all the characters had enough screen time for us to get to know them (especially the ones who haven't appared that much, Hawkeye and Black Widow especially), but it also gave the characters enough time to learn each other's strengths and weaknessess. It didn't feel rushed at all, and neither did it drag.
It could easily have been a garbled mess of clashing egos, all fighting for screen time, but they got it just right. The trouble may be with the next films.

JF- your first post pretty much summarised my feelings! I've gotta say I'm not that big a fan of superhero movies but my friend convinced me it was worth seeing, and I really really loved it! To the Extent that I had to buy Captain America on DVD straight after to get more of his lovely face I enjoyed Iron Man and the first X Men, but I've always found them to be a little far fetched and too tropey -like seriously why in literally EVERY film does the hero have a rubbish costume, then they defeat their first enemy and make a cool one! And WHY are 90% of the women red-heads? But I didn't think Avengers was like that- I really liked that it was more focused on the characters as characters and not just heroes who defeat bad guys.

So I saw this for the third time tonight, and it was still amazing.
Can I just point out the fact that Tom Hiddleston is perfect? He makes what should be a ridiculous and shallow comic book villain stereotype into a character that's surprisingly sympathetic given that he's trying to take over the world. What? Watch the movie because of my love and adoration for the villain? Preposterous.

The Avengers made my inner geek insanely happy!! It was absolutely fantastic!! Not only where there super hot guys to stare at (Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America ) but the interactions between the characters and the way they evolved to become a team was done very well. Like y'all said, there was a little bit of ego clashing, but it was kept to a relative minimum. And the Hulk, this is the first time I've liked the Hulk. This Hulk was done very well, you didnt see him come out every time Bruce got a paper cut, instead he came out exactly when he was needed, which made his appearances awesome and fun. I'm lookin forward to Avengers 2!!

Speaking of the Hulk, I was concerned about them replacing Edward Norton with Mark Rufalo (especially since I loved Edward Norton's preformance) but Mark Rufalo did a very good job playing the character. I still would have like to have seen Norton, but what can ya do?

I really enjoyed the Avengers. Of course, I spent the majority of the movie swooning over the cinematography and being in love with Joss Whedon. They did an excellent job with character development and didn't see the need for explosions every minute. I was also pleasantly surprised with Black Widow, as they actually treated her as a normal character and not an "action girl".

I agree about the Black Widow, Nurr. I also like how she brought a human aspect to the team, along with Hawkeye. The Hulk isnt exactly human, Tony Stark has his Iron Man armor, Captain America is a super soldier, and Thor is a demi-god, but Black Widow and Hawkeye are just humans with a unique set of spy skills.

Saw it for the second time today. I liked Hawkeye a lot. Cool bow, and left-handed archery. And Thor, of course.

I just saw it again tonight. It was even better the second time around, because I really got to focus on the characters, and I caught things that I didnt catch the first go round. And I agree Nienna, Hawkeye was awesome. I really liked his character, and I hope we get to see more of him down the road in future Marvel movies.

Agreed. As a non-comic reader, I think Hawkeye is awesome and I want to know more about him. One little glimpse in Thor and then very little "actual" him in the Avengers is not enough. So hopefully he'll show up a lot in the Black Widow movie.

So is anyone else sad that poor Phil died? Agent Coulson has been there since the beginning, that took me by surprise, and almost made me cry. Although I couldnt help but laugh when he still managed to get a shot on Loki, "So thats what it does"

Yeah, I wish Thor had more screen time. It seems like Loki kinda stole it all.

I love how Loki was played as a serious threat, yet still suffered from villian stereotyping. No less than three times did someone teach him that he should not stop to gloat or make speeches, yet the lesson never really sank in. Hulk slinging him around like he was trying to kill a spider on the floor was one of only a handfull of times I actually applauded in a theater.
I was a little saddened by Coulson, since he was one of probably the first normal SHIELD agent in the history of comics to actually get a personality and a role, not to mention he's on of only a handful of characters ever to be intoduced in a meduim other than the comics and become popular enough with the fans to make his way into the comics themselves. For that, I tip my hat.

Well I've seen this movie twice. First time by myself, second time with potr. And here are my thoughts.
Great movie. Great great movie.
The plot was really simple. Bad guy wants to take over the world, good guys have to stop him. It's a comic book movie and it isn't trying to be like the Dark Knight Saga or Watchmen. It's aiming for a good action movie and it delivered in full.
What was a small concern for me was the presence of Robert Downey, Jr. Don't get me wrong, I love that guy, but he has a tendency to steal scenes. It's not his fault; he's just charismatic. But what I loved is that Joss Whedon fully knew that and allowed him to steal the scenes but at the same time, he made sure enough screentime and development was given to other characters. Hawkeye, Black Widow, even Agent Coulson and Nick Fury gets some development. Loki was also great as your standard-evil-cackling villain. And the great thing is that helmet he wears actually looks right for him.
What was great was just how true to the characters everyone was. Tony Stark was still a raging narcissist ego but when confronted with Coulson's death, he's privately devastated inside. There's a small reference to Jane Foster when Thor asked about her and it would make sense for Thor to ask about her. And with Bruce Banner, he has this tendency to hide his face and look away whenever someone in uniform is near him. After all, he was running from the government and the military for how-many years, it would make sense for him to be cautious.
The pacing was just great. It's two and a half hours. It so does not feel like two and a half hours.
The humour was amazing. Very deadpan, very snarky. Tony Stark and Loki are particular noticeable offenders but also the physical/slapstick humour was good. The Hulk punching Thor out of the camera comes in mind.
The action. Oh my god. That was just amazing. The best scene was the tracking shot. I'm very very interested to see how that was done. Because it is obviously CGI but everything was in one shot.
Overall. Just amazing. I'm buying this for DVD.
