I'll expand my thought since I've had time to think about it. My theory is that Clive Barker wanted us to view Chickentown and her parents as the normal boring parents, and that Abarat is her escape from reality. The one adventure everyone longs for in their life....hmmmm

yeah, i liked the one part in the second book about Candy's father's imagination was too small or not imaginative enought to handle all of the wonders of Abarat that came with her in the ocean. Something like that
