Being a landowner brought a lot of money. First of all, you had tenants who paid you rent and would also work the land. Then you paid your tenants a wage, but you also sold the wheat, grain, fruit or meat from your land to make money. And then it goes on and on. So while a lot of Jane Austen's men folk were born into money, someone along the line had started it all, and they were just continuing with the tradition.
