I LOVED His Dark Materials, i love the refrences to Paradise Lost. If i had a Daemon it would be a Dragon or some sort of large scaly beast. My friend who is a Christian, says that Pullman is trying to convert everybody to being an Aethist(sp?). I disagree because everybook needs an Antagonist and the Church/God/The One was the antagonist.

Strange-Golden Compass? Hmm *googles it* xD My favourite book will have to be The amber spyglass, why? In all honesty I don't know but I thought I'd be awkward*coughs* Nah my true favourite is Northern lights, it got me interested about the book, I must say Phillip Pullman is an amazing author.
Hn..I wonder..I've been told that there's going to be a film, created of each book.

You know, I hate to say it, but I had NO idea what you were talking about when you said "His Dark Materials." I didn't realize it until I was rereading the books and I saw it mentioned somewhere.
I'm currently rereading them...and I LOVE them!!! ALL of them!!
When I first read them, god it was YEARS ago...I feel so OLD...and I didn't pay attention to the Paradise Lost quote at the beginning of The Golden Compass/Northern Lights...and when I started rereading it...I saw it and BURST out laughing....I've read Paradise Lost...and wow. Thought that was insane...never knew my struggles in Humanities would come through in this book.
Larien told me about the movie thing...and I FLIPPED out. No freakin' way can they DO this. *runs around screaming like a maniac* Okay, must breathe. She sent me some link to a list of POSSIBLE cast...polled by "fans." Bah! I was IN TEARS! Whether from shock or horror or both, I may never know...think I scared Larien though.
Fave character? Have absolutely NO idea....
YAY!!!

Hm I remember that night, Montana! I didn't realize that you would freak out so much when I sent you that link!
Here is the link that I sent to Montana, so that the rest of you can puzzle over this informal poll:
http://www.bridgetothestars.net/index.p ... vie&p=poll
I haven't read the books in years...well, I read Golden Compass a few weeks ago, but not the others, as I don't have them. So I can't really say which is my favorite. My favorite characters are Iorek and Serafina Pekkala (such a cool name!)
And I agree with you, Montana. I didn't really pay attention to the PL references until I read the book again either.

I read the first two of His Dark Material. So far I liked The Subtle Knife but I have yet to read the last one so the opinion doesn't really count. My deamon would probably be a wolf, fox, or an owl....
I liked pretty much the witches in general, I didn't have a favorite character.

I liked His Dark Materials too. I agree it's pretty hard to have a favorite character in this (they're all great).
The third book is as great as the other two, Elven Willow, but the ending is really sad though.

Lol, I liked looking over the results for that poll. The one thing that made me laugh the most, and that's saying that Nicole Kidman should play Mrs. Coulter. Everytime I read the books, I imagine her for some reason.

Hmmm....well, I'm about half way through "The Amber Spyglass" and I love it. I have to say that "The Subtle Knife" was really good. It was so dark and powerful....hmmm....But I love them all in their own ways...I don't think I have a favourite. I mean, I like "The Golden Compass" and it has a special place in my heart, but they're all so good!

For some reason, I really love Lord Asriel. My brother read the Golden Compass and the first thing he said to me about it was you are just like Lord Asriel. Still, that's cool with me. No offense to Christianity and Narnia-lovers, but I like Pullman's idea of writing something that counters Narnia. It is just my opinion, that is all.

You know, I have to agree with you on that point about Christianity. It was funny because I started rereading these books right after I finished rereading the Chronicles of Narnia. So, you can imagine the obvious and stark contrast between the two. I really like the idea of "countering" Narnia and such....if only because it's refreshing in some ways. But from rereading these, I find it more of an attack of sorts against the Church. Just the idea that these people are willing to sacrifice everything to reveal the truth, that I find remarkable. But I don't want to go all political and religious...because that's a no-no...and I have a feeling I might soon be harassed by many of those who think I'm blatantly trying to bash their religion. *sigh*
It's strange, reading these books, finding similarities and such between it and things I never thought I'd find comapred in this sort of literature. Well, there's obviously Paradise Lost (with the quote at the beginning of The Golden Compass) and the obvious similiarties. But when I was reading The Subtle Knife, I stumbled across something rather interesting. Phillip Pullman made references to Plato and a "cave" that I don't think ANYONE would pick up on unless they had actually READ Plato's "The Republic." The funny thing was, that this past year, I was in a Political Theory class, and that was ironically the first thiing we had to read. In which, you can find an allegory about a cave. It's really hard to explain, but essentially, we as humans live in the cave and are forced only to see what is in front of us. Shadows. For all intents and purposes, we think they are real, but if we get away, escape, we find that there were people behind us making the shadows. And that would be the government. And if we manage to find daylight, and actually get outside, well then we can finally start to see the truth. Sort of enlightened, so to speak. But this is all hard to sum up and understand if you haven't read it. I just thought it was interesting for those who had read Plato, could see deeper into what Pullman was talking about when he mentioned Plato and the cave. Just the hint at the "Shadows" in the books, and Plato's shadows really interest me. That really didn't make much sense...but oh well.

Montana---write essays much? Though I love that you referenced Plato's cave metaphor...we talked about that in some of my classes too, and it's a really cool metaphor.
I remember reading this series for the first time, and I wasn't able to read the books at night (if I wanted to get a good night's sleep, that is) and it wasn't just because I'm a little squeamish when it comes to darkness and anything creepy. I got freaked out by the Church references, because the Church was behind so much of the bad things happening, and because the Church isn't something fictional.
As for the countering Narnia thing, I've never thought of the Chronicles of Narnia as a Christian allegory, although there are obvious references. I just enjoy it as a good story, same as I do with Philip Pulllman's work.

I really liked the first two, but I didn't care for the last one. It was slightly... evil. Idk I just didn't like it.

For some strange reason when I read the books, I imagine Liam Neeson being Lord Asriel. So I guess he's pretty good for that part.
