I agree with most of the things that have been said so far, but I have my doubts about this one:
Meldawen wrote: I do think Paolini could be a good writer. But he needs to work on originality, and I think his characters need more flaws. By the end of Eldest, Eragon's practically invincible. I was really bummed when they made him all elf-ish, because it pretty much took away his last disadvantage. Invincible characters are really, REALLY boring. I also think he needs to deviate from the whole chosen-one-who-saves-the-world plot, do something a bit more interesting.
The thing I liked about the ending of Eldest was that Eragon is NOT invincible! In fact, one does think so after him becoming elfish and stuff. And then in his first battle he is completely and utterly defeated by Murtagh. He could have killed him if he wanted. So I think this gives his character quite an interesting side. He has done everything he can to learn the things he needs to defeat Galbatorix, and the next thing he learns is that he's much too weak to win.
No, I really liked the ending, and I just don't understand the "invincible"-argument (which comes up quite often when discussing Eragon).

'Invincible' is admittedly a strong term, especially in light of his getting defeated by Murtagh, but I think my point stands that Eragon is really, really powerful. I think it's more that I feel he has too many advantages. He's a dragonrider AND an elf AND he has magic, making him powerful and physically superior and pretty much able to destroy anything in his way (except Murtagh, as you pointed out). So you're right about him not being quite invincible, but I still think he's far too powerful.
Though admittedly I find Eragon an extremely irritating character personality-wise as well, so I may be unfairly biased against him

And the only reason Murtagh won is because he knows special words in the Ancient Language that are more powerful than the regular ones that the evles/Eragon use that use less power and so Murtagh has more strength than Eragon, plust Eragon fought the whole battle while Murtagh didn't.
Murtagh had the upper hand in the battle including the element of suprise(Eragon wasn't sure if he wanted to fight his friend or not). Though, if Murtagh hadn't had these upper hands... I'm not sure what would have happened.
But I think it's predictable that at the last minute when all hope will seem to fade, Eragon will get some new power or find himself more powerfull and have more strength. (c'mon, isn't that how most heros end up?)

Im betting that once the liddle elfie Eragon opens the Vault of Souls he wont be any different than Galbatorix or Murtagh. Which is really very disappointing, because flaws help to shape a character. No flaws=No personality.

So, did anyone get Brisingr? I bought it today and I have to admit that the first 50 pages were better than I expected.

One of my friends is lending it to me as soon as he's done. I didn't think Eldest was worth the money, and I'm anticipating something along the same lines for Brisingr. I'm also mad that he made it not a trilogy, and broke the six-letter-title-starting-with-E trend. Hmph. Have some consistency.
(I'm aware that that's petty But it's actually how I feel. I really don't think he needs TWO books to finish up. But I haven't read it, and perhaps he'll surprise me.)

I feel the same way as you Melda, so don't worry about feeling petty! I was furiouse when I found he broke his title trend. It seems to juvanille of him. Of course... that's coming from a 15 year old girl whose very sceptical of Eragon but still kinda likes it 'cause of Murtagh and dragons... lol.

*ish very hyper* I wanna get the book soooooooo bad. But with gas prices as they are I can't get to the store, and I don't have a credit card so I can't get it online... *does a nervous dance* I can't wait to see what happens... (yeah, I'm obsessed... is it that obvious? )

I think I can wait a little while, but I do want to see how the story goes. Well, I want to see how Murtagh's story goes. He is my favorite character, and I'm hoping his story goes better than, say, Norrington's did. But I am a little worried...well, I guess we'll see.

Well I got the book on Saturday!
FWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
I haven't gotten really started on it though. And that's because of school crap. BAH.
But I'm excited for it. And I don't care and frankly don't understand all the damned hullaballoo about the rest of the series. I liked Eldest just fine, so I'm looking forward to Brisingr.

I know what you're talking about, I wish he had stuck to the trilogy and all would be well... not another 2-years-wait.
I'm sceptical about the series, too, but still I want to know how everything ends.
I'm at page 212 now and he's doing better than I expected.

Sorry for the double post, I just had to tell you that I just finished the book! I will keep my opinions to myself, though, unless there's another one who wants to discuss it too.

I don't really want to know any spoilers accept the answer to one question!
What happens to Murtagh? Does he die? Is he even mentioned in the book?
