I found this artical and thought it was quite amusing: http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/living/home/14007776.htm

I especially liked some of their Tips for decorating:

Quote:
Pile them high: Stack books on the floor or in baskets. The casual arrangement makes them inviting.

Yay I'm already doing that, I must be decorating my room well. :-D And here was me thinking that the only reasons for piling your books up on the floor was you'd run out of shelf space or you were too lazy to put them on the shelf after you'd finished them.

Quote:
Raise up the light: A lamp that is too low for its location can be raised by placing it on a stack of books, says designer Linda French of Total Interiors, Grapevine. Custom bases can be ordered to raise lamps, but a stack of books is a more personal touch.

I do that too :-D Again I though the reason was lazyness and the fact that I have excessive amounts of books lying around but it would seem not.

Quote:
Tell a book by its cover: Arrange books by color to help establish a color scheme, French advises.

Not author or genre but colour?

This website that they talk about is very funny: http://www.bookdecor.com You buy books by the amount of wallspace they take up at it.

I've seen places that say to stack books up vertically. I like to have my books easy to grab, without risking pulling them all down by grabbing one off the bottom! lol

I like doing that. I usually use older books that I'm too afraid to ruin by reading, and stack them vertically. It can have a cool effect, especially if you have interesting old books.

lol, that is funny! And after all that effort I went to to get new bookshelves - it turns out that it is more stylish to leave them in stacks on the floor! :p

Actually, I must admit that I go through phases when I arrange my books by colour/size and so on. I do weird things, like have all my 'nice' new books on one shelf, and all the old ones I've bought second-hand on another, and old-hardbacks on another and so on...

I collect old book. I have them arranged everywhere. I love the musty smell of old books. I have one that the previous owner doodled all over in calligraphy and circled his favorite passages. You can't beat that.

I think bookshelves are good enough for me. ;) I think books should be treated with respect so having them on the floor when shelves are available seems a bit pointless.

Well if your books aren't designer, they're not worthy of being dislpayed.

*dies of laughter at the above post* I think that books should be put away where they wont fall over and bend their covers(soft covers only tho) and if you have carpet in your room, putting a huge stack of books on the floor is very unstable and has the chance of falling on someone(mainly the occupant of the room).

Tell me, when did books stop being a thing that you read? ;) Oh yes, I can just see myself using my first-edition Thin Man as a base for lamp. Or better yet, how about my 1890's Shakespeare? :yuck:

I'm such an organised person when it comes to my room, but I think I might take into considerdation some of these "decorating tips", they might come in handy. I especially like the idea of organising books by colour, that'd be rather fun to do! :-D

The link doesn't work for me, but I think I can make out the meaning of what you all have posted. I must agree with those who said it's too unorganized to have stacks of books on the floor, it tends to attract dust and fluff in horrendous numbers... But books, however, do look cool and cosy and are really nice to put in the room!

My books are on me bookshelf. That's where they will stay! I stack my video games on the floor and organize them by colour...
