Has anyone noticed that Fleur only makes it through one of the tasks? The first one. In the black lake she is unable to finish, and in the maze she's...attacked by vines and also unable to finish. I was just curious as to why you think Ms. Rowling would do this. Thanks!

Ah, but see, is that it? Because the author herself is a woman, obviously. I don't see why she would do that, thinking that girls are weaker. She went from being virtually homeless to a best selling author. You know what I mean?

Because not all girls are "girl power" girls. I think it was very good to have a fallible girl, because, well... we're fallible too.

It did really bug me, as all the contestants were very stereotypical towards their gender- Fleur was flouncy, pretty and had a very high pitched voice, and Cedric, Harry and Viktor were your average hunky teenagers, and she made Fleur fail miserably. JKR may have been encouraged to do so by her editor or something though, remeber they wouldn't even let her put her first name on the cover, cos they thought boys wouldn't read something by a female author.

Well said, Arsa, I agree. Fleur is just a very feminie girl, and I like that. Again, not all girls will be like Hermione, who slap naughty, nasty boys.

In my personal opinion, though, I can only take so much of the "tough girl."

It was a slap in the book, a punch in the movie.

It kind of bugged me too how the only female contestant failed rather horribly. I dunno, JK doesn't really do much for strong female characters. You've got Hermione and McGonagal but they're the 'smart' ones that are considered too strict/annoying. I guess there Katie Bell and Angelina but we don't really know that much about them. Mrs Weasley...typical full-time mother. I suppose there's Tonks and Ginny.

It's not that she doesn't show females as being capable. The unfortunate thing is that it's still the usual male-dominated story.

It is very stereotypical, and you bring up a good point Beriadanwen. Many stories in literature, it is usually about men, or the male-dominance. The men are the heroes, the men are the villains, the men are what runs the story.

JK Rowling started off the story with pretty much male-dominant storyline. Hermione and Professor McGonagall with a few other selected mentions of the others girls in the first book. Second book, the new adventures and troubles are still revolved around the men. PoA, nothing huge. Hermione gets a slap or two, and we're introduced to several new male characters including the mention of Cho Chang. Fourth book, we're introduced to several female characters, all of them not at all worth mentioning as examples of 'strong-powered' women.

Order of the Phoenix is finally when we see a sense of strong-powered women. Tonks, particularly. And oddly enough Umbridge, as crazy and toad-like she is; she had the position of power. Tonks, we may be deceived by how strong she is by the fact that she has the ability to morph; however, in the battle in the Ministry of Magic she is also one of the first fighters of the Aurors to get knocked out. =/

It is possible that JK Rowling is following what is stereotyped. It may be so stereotyped among fantasy writers that she may not even notice it herself.

Rent_, I hear you. Kudos to you for bringing this up. I noticed that too and I got so mad. I kind of think that it was a sterotyping of girls. Only my opinion.
Though Miss Rowling is a girl and has had to go through alot, perhaps she hasn't had to show physical strength before. Or perhaps most of the girls that she knows (maybe except for herself) are "physicaly weak" and therfore she thinks that most of the girls in her books should be weak.
Either way I think that Fleur she should have made it to secound or something or if not that than at least not have failed so utterly.
As far as I'm conserened, there is a huge need for more girl power in Harry Potter. Hermione, Ginny, Pansy, and Fleur, are a few of the more reguarly Mentioned girls that I would like to make comment on. Pansy is not strong from what we've seen, she just fawns over Malfoy (not that I can really blame her for that), Fleur totally failed at pretty much all of the tasks to an embarrassing point, Ginny had to be rescued by (drum roll) a male (Harry), and Hermione is over all "smart". However I must back Hermione up because she has proved that she's not afraid to be strong which is more than I can say for the rest.
I want more girl power!
