Has anyone read The Scarlet Pimpernel, by Baroness Orczy?? It has become one of my very favorite books. It is also a play and a movie (the 1982 version has Ian McKellen as Chauvelin :P).

I know, I was the same way. I just couldn't read it fast enough. :) I love the way that it is written. For instance, the parts where Marguerite is thinking how she would surely fall in love with the Scarlet Pimpernel if she could ever meet him, and then complaing about her "foppish", stupid husband. :P

I LOVE that book! In all actuality, I find anything with the French Revolution fascinating, so..

I haven't seen the '82 movie, but I've seen a different version. It is really good - I watch it a LOT.

Percy is incredible. I mean, he's just so good at faking out Chauvelin. The end of the book is so good at the hut and the "Jew", and just how he's so brilliant!

I know. :) I also am fascinating with the French Revolution over all, and in my opinion this is the best.

Which version of the movie did you see?? I'd love to see it. I also highly recommend the '82 version- it's a bit different from the book at the end, but they get away with it because it's so amazing. :P

Does anyone else have the soundtrack from the play?? I absolutely LOVE it.

I've seen the '82 movie...my sister loves it a lot more than I do, but I've certainly seen it a lot.

I love this book as well. :D

I have always loved the film versions - the 1930's one with Lelise Howard and the 1980's one with Anthony Andrews - so I decided to read the book and loved it just as much as the films. One of my favourite bits was at the end when Marguerite was tied up at the boat house and the she heard "a good English "damn" and the Jewish man was actually Percy. :teehee: He's so clever but I think also sad. When he was speaking to her outside their home and you could tell he wanted to say so many things to her, but he couldn't.

I love the tension in scenes like that. :P I also think that the library seen in the '82 version is brilliant. It's just so perfectly done.

Could someone maybe tell me what this book is about if it's not too much trouble? I have it, and I've been thinking about reading it, but I don't really know what it's about.

It is about an Englishman during the French Revolution who goes into France and brings the aristocrats who are about to be executed back to England. The book centers around Percy and Marguerite Blakeney, an English couple, and the French revolutionist Chauvelin. Chauvelin knew Marguerite when she was in France, and essentially blackmails her with her brother's (a member of the Scarlet Pimpernel's band) freedom. He wants her to find out who the Scarlet Pimpernel is (she moves in high society so she wouldn't have too much of a problem). It's really interesting, I suggest you read it!

Ooooo it sounds cool. I love to read both fiction and nonfiction about the French Revolution. That period in time has always really interested me. I'm reading a few other things right now, but I'll definitely have to read this one soon.

Yes, I am also interested in the French Revolution, but I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good story.

I love Percy's character and Marguerite's as well. Perfect couple. :-)

I saw the 87 TV version. It's amazing. Yes, Percy and Marguerite are awesome together.

Has anyone else seen the musical version? I was able to catch a show in L.A. a few years back and I *still* have the songs rattling around in my head.
