I love the Pit and the Pendulum. That was the story that really got me into Edgar Allan Poe.

Oooh, the Pit and the Pendulum. CLASSIC Poe. :notworthy:

I remember when we studied him back in middle school. We did it around Halloween, and we were reading P&P aloud in class, and every time I read it aloud, afterwards, my teacher said that it just seemed normal for me to be doing it. :P Like Poe's words fit me. XD

But my favourite is still "The Fall of the House of Usher."

I have to say that I do enjoy Poe. =) My friends say that his work depresses them, but I disagree. I used to feel the same way, but if you don't let it 'emotionally affect' you, and just sit back and appreciate the imagination, diction, and imagery, his work is really enjoyable to read. =) I'm psycho, I tend to read it in the fall...I was even dumb enough to read "The Pit and the Pendulum" for the first time at 3 a.m. the night before Halloween. =D But yeah, I have to say that I liked "The Bells," "The Black Cat," "The Fall of the House of Usher," and "The Oval Portrait," the best.

YES. I LOVE reading The Bells out loud. =P It's amazing to hear how each word seems to make the sounds of the bells.

Hmm...I've never read the Black Cat...what's that one about? O.o

The Black Cat is about a man. He likes animals and his wife has a cat named Pluto. One day the man tried to move Pluto, but the cat bit him. Angry, the man picked up a pen ang gouged out the cats eye. The man feels sorry for it, but like in all Of Edgar's tale, he soon becomes insane. He hangs the cat from a tree and that night his house burns. He and his wife manage to escape. He finds another cat that looked just like Pluto (its even missing an eye. The only difference is a white splotch in its chest) and brings it home. The cat almost trips him, and in anger he tries to strike it with his axe. His wife stops him, which was a very bad move on her part. He whacks her with his axe, and she dies. He then holes her up in the basement wall. After four days the police come to his house. He lets them look around. When hi gets to the basement he taps the wall, admiring how strong they were. From inside the wall comes yelling. The policemen tear apart the wall to find the wife's corpse with the cat on top. The white splotch in his chest is in the shape of a gallows.

*makes mental note never to read The Black Cat!!!*

Ohh this thread seems to have been so much livelier than the newer Poe thread... It's been fun to read through people's favorites and experiences! :-)

I absolutely adored Masque of the Red Death; the story was amazing in itself, and the way it was referenced in Phantom of the Opera (he wears the costume during the masquerade scene...in the musical, NOT the film, that is...), gave me so much more respect for that play, and I ended up reading the Read Death all over again.

The first time I read The Tell-Tale heart, I hid under my own bed all night. XD'
Not a good sign.

Annabel Lee is a folk song, too; Joan Baez sang exactly the same words to a rather etheral tune...sounded like a jewelery box.

Edgar Allan Poe is one of my favorite authors! I love The Bells, The Raven, The Pit and the Pendulum, and The Goldbug... and just about everything else. Don't you just love the shivers you feel when you read his works? I read in the beginning of a book of Poe's works that Poe liked to prey on the fears of the people that lived in his time. This includes being buried alive, murders, etc.
