OK time for me to write a whole lot more about Bernard Cornwell (I've read nearly all of his books) and do a proper breakdown of his works.

Being the uber Sean fan I am, I found that a great little wink at Sharpe in FotR. :lol: I agree Bernard Cornwell is a fantastic writer when it comes to historical fiction. I would recommend him as well.

I myself tend to stray towards fantasy when it come to books but I have read a lot of different things.
There is a series I am reading now that has pretty much just come out called 'The Majat Code' by Anna Kashina. The chapters are fairly short, but the story itself is one I find very interesting. Fights, warrior/mercenary codes of ethics in question, kingdom politics, religious politics, and a little magic... There is quite a bit going on and I find myself not wanting to go to work because I want to know what happens. :lol:

The Fault in our Stars!!! Awesome book that really makes you think about the meaning of life and love. John Green filled it with humour, romance and drama. You'll read it again and again.

Also any book by Gail Levine. Although these books are written for young girls they are great reads for women of all ages.

I'd recommend the book "The Witch of Blackbird Pond" by Elizabeth George Speare. Brilliant story about New England in the mid 1700s.

Actually, anything by Elizabeth George Speare. She's great!

The wingfeather saga is a great series of 4 books for people who love fantasy! Written by Andrew Peterson.

Jaye L. Knight has some good stuff as well.


And if you like fantasy poetry check out "Poems of Varsian Lore" by Jason P. Hein

Doctor Sleep by Stephen King. It's the sequel to The Shining, and if you haven't read that one either you should. If you like horror, of course.

Ceremony of the Innocent by Taylor Caldwell

This book traces the life of Ellen Watson from her childhood where she was shunned by most and treated nastily by her aunt, to her marriage to a wealthy man...and i don't remember the rest except that I love this book. It is my fave after The Silmarillion.

I guess I better read it again. It has been well over 10 years since I turned it's pages. I read some reviews and lots of people did not like it one bit. The book is mostly sad because Ellen is an *innocent* and gets taken advantage of at every turn. Yeah, I better read it again.

Browsed through the posts here, and noticed that the recommendations are all for fiction, not to say (high) fantasy (if some with historical trappings). There, I would recommend two book series by Paul C. Doherty (some published under his pseudonym Paul Harding):

The "Hugh Corbett" series, set during the reign of Edward I. of England in the 13th and early 14th century, as well as the reign of his son Edward II after that (as per information given me by Evil.Shieldmaiden, who seems to have read them all), a total of 19 books published between 1986 and 2017.

The "Brother Athelstan" (and Sir John Cranston) series, set during the (later) 14th-century reign of Richard II of England (grandson of Edward III, who was the son of Ed II and grandson of Ed I), a total of 18 books published between 1991 and 2017.

I only have those books translated into German (my wife bought the first ones, two books as a hardcover special edition), being six "Corbetts" and the first eight "Athelstans". But as I already mentioned above, Evil.Shieldmaiden seems have read them all, and definitely recommends them. One thing that may present a problem is that the oldest of these books is 32 years old, and 18 of 37 over 20 years old, so some might be out of print.

But as I find nothing in the heading of this thread limiting recommendations to fantasy or even just fiction, I have a recommendation from my (much larger) non-fiction section.

Guns, Germs, and Steel (1997, third edition in 2007)
Collapse (2005, second edition 2011)
The World Until Yesterday (2012 German, 2013 English!!!)

If you like fantasy I would highly recommend the Wingfeather Saga, by Andrew Peterson.
