Post subject:  Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
Has anyone read this book? I just got done reading it for my English class and it's very good. It's extremely sad and the ending is much like another book of Steinbecks, "The Pearl" and I cried. [sniff]. I recommend it for those who don't mind lots of swearing and the fact that the book may or may not lower your IQ.


[Summary on Book Cover (Because Kit's bad at them)]:
They are an unlikely pair: George is "small and quick and dark of face"; Lennie, a man of tremendous size, has the mind of a young child. Yet they have formed a "family," clinging together in the face of loneliness and alienation.
Laborers in California's dusty vegetable fields, they hustle work when they can, living a hand-to-mouth existence. For George and Lennie have a plan: to own an acre of land and a shack they can call their own. When they land jobs on a ranch in Salinas Valley, the fulfillment of their dream

The book is very short. Only 107 pages or so. I got done reading it in about 3 days. During school days that is.

I've heard of the book. I've read The Pearl before, but I wasn't so impressed by it so I wasn't so eager to go out and borrow Of Mice and Men from the library. I had to do an essay on The Pearl before . . . Perhaps I should read Of Mice and Men if you really recommend it. :bye2:

You weren't impressed by The Pearl? Hmmm, that's odd. All the people I know who has read The Pearl loved it very much. But hey, to his or her own. It could be that John Steinbeck just really isn't your cup of tea, which is understandable since he writes very traumatic and dark stuff.

I read Of Mice and Men for English last year. I liked it a lot but it was so sad at the end :( I haven't read any of Steinbecks other books...maybe I should.

I read the book last year for English too. We had to write essays and do a play on it. I reckon the book's okay, not as interesting as some other books, but it has a nice plot.

We read it in English too a few years ago. I enjoyed it but the book was spoiled because our teacher read it out to us rather than us reading it ourselves.

I haven't read anything from John Steinbeck.
What's The Pearl about and which one should I read first.....mmm, sounds like Steinbeck mightn't exactly be 'my cup of tea' if he has this dark atmosphere and themes in his books.... but if you recommend it I'll give it a try! :angel:

The Pearl is set in during the early 1900's in a Mexican village, and one day a fisherman named Kino fished "The Pearl of the World" to pay for his baby son's illness....But it is indeed the Peal of the World and everyone is somehow trying to steal it from Kino.


I recommend, "Of Mice and Men" first --- The Pearl is really really dark, and much darker than Of Mice and Men but OMAM does have alot of swear words, if you don't mind that --- The Pearl hardly has any, I think it has one or two, I don't quite remember.

I read this book a few days before school started. Last year our drama program put on the play version of it so i was already pretty familiar with it. I recomend it! Good book!

Thanks for the description. I don't mind swear words like if it's a natural part of the story (if people speak like that in this prticular environment) I'd rather have swear words because it makes me believe in the story.

The drawing is nice... though little.... I'm sure it'll make alot more sense to me when I've read the book :angel:

Oh, yeah, thanky..... they look really elvish... especially the girl to the right! :-D But I also meant that it would probably make more sense to me after reading the book..... maybe.....

I read the book for English Class. I thought it was good. It had a sad ending...
