hey has anyone else read the book Go Ask Alice? It is one of the best books I have ever read. It is an anonymous diary of a teenage girl who gets sucked into drugs and stuff. It is SOOO good. (and a good incentive to not do drugs 8)

I read it last year and I think that it's such a good book! The end is so sad cause everything seems fine again and you have no idea what went wrong, what was going through her mind then, or if it was an accident or not. It's a strange ending cause in a regular novel you get some kind of closure and here it's just "here's what happened". You don't get the reasoning or anything. I won't say anymore in case someone here wants to read it, although I think it's probably obvious from what I did say sorry.

Yeah, I read that book last year (8th grade), it was very sad. I remember seeing it around the house even before that because my mom is a therapist (she has books like that in our house). She works with kids like "Alice" at work.

I wouldn't ever want to do drugs and reading that book reinforced my incentive to NEVER do drugs.

It's a true story right? I've heard and seen it, but I've never read it. Maybe I will. Hmmm.

:bye2:

Yeah I kinda felt like that too but I spose they couldn't have done it otherwise b/c it was the girls diary and she didn't write about it.

Elbereth you should definitely read it! It's really good and yes it is a true story.

I READ IT!!! :-D

And it was better than I thought. It's so sad, and it's even more sad by the fact that it was all true. How long ago did this happen? The book was published around 1997, but that could have happened any time before that. I don't really understand the ending. Was it an overdose or a flashback? Or did she get back on drugs? She seemed really dead against drugs, though, but she was pretty tempted.

It's really really sad. :'(

And I feel bad for her family, too. :bye2:

Oh yay! I'm glad you read it :) Her family doesn't actually know what happened in the end. It couldn't have been an accidental overdose, or it could have been a planned overdose. We'll never know, but like it says in the book:

"In some ways that question isn't important. What must be of concern is that she died, and that she was only one of thousands of drug deaths that year."

A planned overdose?? But she seemed really happy in the end. It's really sad. I wish I knew the time period it happened in. The person on the cover - is that really her? :bye2:

I've never read it, but I remember my sister talking about it last year for her summer reading...she really liked it, and she doesn't like to read all too much. I'd say that if SHE likes it (considering that she hates to read), that must mean something!! lol

T :bye2: he point is told from a teenager's point of view, who takes you on a ride to see how drugs really affects you - you should read it. But there's some swearing - although it is really really really sad. :(

Yeah, I think that I will. The swearing probably wouldn't bother me too much, but in any other book it might take something away from the story. When I get back to school I'll probably go and buy it at Barnes and Noble. :)

The swearing in it just goes to show how the girl (the main character) really changed and how she was so disturbed by the drugs. All the swearing just adds to show how true it all is. :bye2:

I read this book about 6 months ago, and it was very eye-opening I guess. I thought the way it ended was pretty disturbing, just because it goes to show you how quickly drugs can take over your life and kill you. She'd only been using drugs for what? A year or so?

A year? I'm thinking that it was probably much longer . . . but probably it only felt that way. But you're right - it was definitely an eye-opener. :bye2:

[font=Arial, sans-serif] It's indeed a very sad book, but one of the most effective I've ever read. After anyone even mentioned drugs around me I got a little jumpy.

I've heard it was a true story, and isn't there even something in the book explaining they found her entries on the back of paper bags and stuff? *Shudder*

Is it just me or are happy endings getting less-frequent?

This is a good book. It was first printed in 1971 and the events took place in 1969 at the height of the 'Hippy Revolution'. There was a TV movie made in the mid 1970's and of course, the theme song was Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit. This song was the impetus for naming the book, as the author's name really wasn't "Alice's" and authorship is listed as 'Anonymous' even though its known to have been written by Beatrice Sparks.
