Has anyone ever read this book by Daphne De Maurier? I wanted to read it after I saw the film JI by Alfred Hithcock (de Mariuer also wrote the book Rebecca which was turned into another Hitchcock film). The book was quite different from the film (or should I say the film was quite different from the book!) and I was very surprised at how much I got involved with the characters. I literally did not want to put it down!

It's basically about an orphaned woman in the early 1800's who after the death of her mother foes to live with her aunt and uncle at Jamaica Inn only to uncover a band of smugglers, ship wreckers and murderers......

Oooo! It's FABULOUS! I loved it.
Have you read any other of Daphne's books?
I've read, Frenchman's Creek, Rebecca, Jamaica Inn and My Cousin Rachel.
All of them were awsome but Rebecca and Frenchman's Creek were probably the best.

Yay!! Glad you liked it EU. Yes, I've read Rebecca which is one of my favourites. I think I will have to read more of her books. I'm a big romantic really as I just looked the story between Jem and Mary.

Yay! Go me! Did you have any idea that the vicar was behind it? I had a slight sneaking suspicion something wasn't right when he and Mary where talking in the carriage and he asked her age and then swallowed really loud. Now that might sound weird but I just thought well if your disinterested why make yourself sound uncomfortable? As I always associate people who do that being uncomfortable.

Well it's only one film. But the BBC did an adaptaion in the 80's so I would love to see that sometime. The whole thing about the book is it really transported me to another time, it was so believable and really brought that period in history to life.

It's on TV a lot as well. Maybe I should change this thread to De Maurier and we can talk about Rebecca. :-)
