Nope, sorry.

As I said, I've been listening to the original cast recording for weeks, and I find what you listen to or even see first, is what you tend to like best. Sometimes though, your opinions can change, and at the moment I haven't heard that much of her in this role, but I think I prefer the voice of the original Eponine, but it might change, I don't know yet. I think personally, she may be trying a little bit too hard for the concert performance. She is more than likely a very good singer, but in this role.. eh she might grow on me. ;)

That's always the danger of liking the soundtrack to a stage show, because when you hear different versions, you get conflicting feelings. Some of the people from the 10th anniversary concert are better than the people on the original West End soundtrack, and vice versa.

Susan Jane Tanner is a particular favourite of mine from the original CD, I didn't know it was her until I read the cast list, as she sounds so dofferent. I first knew her as she played Jellylorum in the TV version of Cats, but she was also in the original, and judging by the soundtrack she had quite a good part and played quite a few of different character, so it was nice she was included in the TV film. She has a very distictive voice, and her Northern accent stands out, so I was thrilled to hear her in the song Masquerade from the original West End production of the Phantom of the Opera. So it was a shame she wasn't involved in the concert as I would have loved to have seen her.

Ok, that was a ranmble I know. :P

i don't know if or how this will affect your opinion of her, but lea salonga was also the singing voice of jasmine in the first aladdin film, and the singing voice of mulan. (and on another disney-related note, the woman who plays cosette was the singing voice of pocahontas.)

personally, i think all of the 10th anniversary cast members are the best i've heard in their roles (and i've heard at least three different casts), but as i said before - each to their own. we all just have different tastes, and i think we learnt from any dream will do that we don't tend to agree when it comes to musical theatre. :P

Ah, well there you go then. She does have a very good singing voice, just for me, I don't think she is the voice of Eponine.

I've not really heard Cosette sing yet, but that's very interesting all the same. :-)

It's always been the same with me, even though the CD of the original West End cast for CATS came before the TV production of it, I saw the TV show first, and after 100 times of seeing it practically, the original seemed weird and wrong almost. It's the same with POTO, hearing the orignal recordings and then seeing the film, I hated the differences, and yet now I adore the film and the music. So it really just depends.

I'm hoping to get the 10th anniversary concert CD as well as the original, so I can listen to them both and enjoy them both.

i totally understand what you mean - when you're used to hearing something sung one way, it can jarr when you hear it sung slightly differently.

however, i have to say that i prefer the film cast of POTO, despite having heard the original cast first. but then, i never did like michael crawford or sarah brightman.

It's the same with characters as well. I was brought up on Basil Rathbone's Sherlock Holmes, and no matter who I saw he was Sherloci Holmes... then I saw Jeremy Brett as SH and my childhood hero was just shattered. Jeremy Brett is totally Sherlock Holmes. :P Not often I prefer the later version of something to the earlier.

Well I like Michael Crawford as an actor and to hear him singing was amazing. I think he has a good voice, but it is hard to imagine that kind of a voice for the Phantom but at the time it was obviously want Lloyd-Webber wanted and everyone seems to have thought he was a good Phantom. But like with most musicals there are changes and revisions, so perhaps now all Phantom's are more like Butler's, stronger and more masculine.

I agree with you about Sarah Brightman. Reminds me of a hamster and her voice hurts my ears.

There were quite a few songs on the Les Mis concert that aren't on my original cast CD. There were also some beginnings of songs that sounded quite explanatory, as if they had been written specifically for the concert, as it wasn't being shown in full, for the audiences benefit so they could follow the story. As you've seen Les Mis, and I know you've seen the concert, have those "new" songs been added over the years, and were some things added for the concert?

yeah, i know what you mean about characters, too. i've seen billy elliot the musical twice now, and i much preferred the first kid i saw playing billy, and i think that has a lot to do with the fact that the way he played the part was much closer to the way jamie bell played it in the film. i really respect the other kid for taking the character in a new direction, and he was great in his own way, but to me jamie is billy, so i naturally preferred the kid who reminded me more of him.

it's been about six and a half years since i saw les mis on stage, so i can't remember everything about it perfectly, but i don't believe anything was added. the show makes several leaps in time and place, so often the starts of songs do need to be quite explanatory anyway.

there were some bits left out thought - the odd line here and there. like there's a short scene in which you see little eponine being mean to little cosette while she's still living with the thenardiers. and before "a little fall of rain", marius opens eponine's coat and sees she's covered in blood and cries "oh my god, it's everywhere!" (i distinctly remember that line because i had to try so hard not to laugh at it - the guy playing marius was fantastic, but the way he delivered that line was awful). and of course the concert misses all the physical stuff, like valjean hitting javert round the head with a shair at the end of "the confrontation"; and gavroche's death (you see him dead on the barricade in one of the weird inserted shots, but you actually see him die in the show - it was so sad).

thinking of gavroche...don't you think the kid who played him at the 10th anniversary concert was brilliant? his confidence is just incredible, and he's a very charismatic performer. i think little cosette is great too. she might not be the best young singer i've heard, but she's a true professional - i've always been very impressed by the way her performance doesn't falter, despite the fact that a bang from off stage makes her jump.
