Post subject: | Evanescence.... Christian? |
I was reading a biogrophy of Amy Lee.... and Evanescence was originally viewed as a christian band.... But they said thats not how they wanted to be viewed, although Amy lee and heco-founder are both self proclaimed christians.... I just thought it was wierd that someone could mistake them for a chrisitan band.... |

Some of their lyrics in "Bring Me To Life" could be interpreted as "Christian" however whoever decided they were a Christian band was not looking at the rest of the cd. In other words, it baffles me too ![]() |

I saw the cd getting sold a the local christian store in town when it was first released. They stopped selling, i guess it would have been after they played it in store a few times and realised its not really classed as a christian cd lol. |

Well the band actually said they didnt want to be classified as christian. It narrowed their audiance range to much. Wich make perfect scence to me. I would do the same thing I think. this is where I found all this info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amy_Lee Long live wikipedia!!!!!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evanescence (Early work and Christian controversy) |

I believe they were kicked from the Christian market after Ben Moody (co-founder/former member of the band) said "What the [major expletive deleted] are we doing up there??" when being informed of their album's position on the Christian music charts. Supposedly some/most of the band members are Christian (for what it's worth), but that obviously doesn't make them a Christian music band. |

^Yes, that's what I heard too. I really don't consider them a Christian band at all and I'm not sure how they were origionally thought to be so. If they were Christian, their music would be considerably happier and more hopeful. |

I agree, though Amy lee has said she is a christian, but so did Ben moody... what ever... I love thier musci, and many of their songs reflect christian beliefs, i would go as far as to call them a christian band.... |

Yeah, not a christian band. I think that assumption was probably made mostly from the song, "Tourniquet." Did I spell that right? But yeah, they didn't intend to be that way and I think it's actually pretty amazing that they were actually seen that way by some people, being very gothic otherwise. |

^Exactly. Here's the way one of my friends (who's actually a member here, Elwing, though she hasn't been on in forever) explained it: the band members are, or claim to be, Christian. But they like to focus on everything that happened before they were, what it's like to not be a Christian. However, being a Christian myself, I don't think that's right. So I have a kind of low opinion of Evanescence because of that, even though I like some of their music; I think that they should be showing their faith rather than writing only really depressing, gothic songs. |

Possibly, but I don't think their songs really are focused on things before they were. Are they converts? I actually don't know that much about this aspect of the band... Evanescence is actually my favorite band and I think their music is absolutely perfect. It does deal with struggles etc., but just because they're of a certain faith it doesn't mean that they don't have problems and doubts, which is why I doubt their pieces focus on a time before anything... Their "depressing gothic" songs are what I DO like about them. I can relate to it more in that respect and for me, the depressing is much more uplifting. Perhaps it's the feeling that someone understands? I'm not sure. |

That is true... just because you are a Christian doesn't mean everything's perfect (as I should most certainly know) I listen to their music when I'm depressed, because it almost feels like a way to vent. I don't allow myself to show emotions, for various reasons, so sometimes listening to music that matches my mood helps. Anyway... I still do wish they would do happier songs... because though yes, Christians still go through really hard times, over all it's a very joyful religion. |

Yes! That's what it's like... a way to vent. That's a good way of putting it. It would be interesting to hear a happy song from them, but I know sometimes it's hard to do that. I have trouble being happy a lot. ![]() |
