The romantic song thread got me thinking about the songs written and sung about the ending of relationships. Here are five that came to mind right away...
Gotye ~ Somebody I Used To Know
Arctic Monkeys ~ Do Me A Favour
Led Zeppelin ~ Babe, I'm Going To Leave You
Mumford And Sons ~ White Blank Page
Seventy Sevens ~ Unbalanced

Another one I'll add is The Eagles - Already Gone

This song fits the topic. I used it in a fanfic of Tar-Aldarion about his 2nd family he had in Middle Earth and the last time he saw them. He then left the shores of Middle Earth to sail back to his wife, Erendis, to find she had committed suicide in the ocean.

This is a newer one by Jana Kramar that I really like.

There you go Jax. Jana is beautiful!
I'll add one of the biggest 'break-up/try to get back together' songs of my era, and was only reminded me of it when the two parties recently got together to perform, tour, and make an album. I am talking about Judy Collins and Stephen Stills and the song 'Suite: Judy Blue Eyes'. In a tour interview, when asked about the song, Stephen said he wrote it in three parts during his heart-break, and when he sang it to her the first time, she said, "It's a lovely song, but it won't get me back." Here is the original studio version, and a recentish live version...

How could I forget Fleetwood Mac?
The ultimate break up song between Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, as this line-up of the band were making their best albums at the time they were self-destructing.
And on an earlier Fleetwood Mac note, I have to add the bluesy 'My Baby's Gone' from the Peter Green/Jeremy Spencer days of the band several years before....

For me, not necessarily for reasons of the break-up behind it, just for the searing power of the song, the song is “Layla” by Derek and The Dominos. Has to do with the George Harrison, Pattie Boyd and Eric Clapton emotional turmoil, but again, the background fades before the raw emotion of the song – especially with Duane Allman letting his slide guitar play turn everything into molten lava.

Alrighty - from the sad to the angry to the resigned....
Skinny Love - Bon Iver
What's a Girl to do? - Bat for Lashes
Oh Well, OK - Elliot Smith
I Know it's Over - The Smiths
Gone for Good - The Shins
Youth - Daughter
Untouchable Face - Ani di Franco (content warning: very rude words - which is part of its appeal to me, and I think we can all identify with unrequited love)
Kiss With a Fist - Florence + The Machine (content warning: violence)
